Obituary

RICHARD L. BABCOCK JR., 61, left this vale of tears on Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, surrounded by family and listening to some of his favorite music. Rick was a lifelong resident of Fort Wayne. He graduated from North Side High School in 1969, and was last employed by PNC Bank as a mortgage loan officer. Shortly after graduating high school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp., from which he was honorably discharged in 1975. He was proud of his service, proud of the Corp, and a proud Devil Dog / Leatherneck / Jarhead to the end of his days. He loved music. He was a member of and / or formed several bands, beginning in his teen years....
He was a member of and / or formed several bands, beginning in his teen years. The most successful of these was 'The Wild Ones', for whom Rick wrote or co-wrote most of the material, performing as lead singer and lead guitarist. 'The Wild Ones' won a recording session in Chicago, Ill. as a result of their winning the Talented Teen Competition in 1966, and subsequently recorded two of their songs. Rick was instrumental in the formation of the Crisis Pregnancy Center in Fort Wayne, in response to the Roe v. Wade abortion decision of 1973. He spent countless hours fundraising and speaking at churches and other venues in an effort to bring awareness and gather support on behalf of the unborn and for their mothers. He is survived by his sisters, Cassandra Schmidt, Vickie DeBaillie and Lisa (Daniel) Wisniewski; nieces, Sian DeBaillie Matson, Toni Wisniewski and Kristi (Jamie) Clark; nephews, Brandon (Amanda) DeBaillie and Joel Schmidt; great-nephews, Alec, Connor and Maddox Matson; and great-niece, Scarlett Clark. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard L. Sr. and Martha Ann Babcock. Memorial service is 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at Hockemeyer & Miller Funeral Home, 6131 St. Joe Road, Fort Wayne.
