RICHARD ARTHUR BECKER

Richard Becker, a devoted husband, father, son and brother, and a 16-year St. Helena resident, died in a tragic cycling accident on August 18, 2012 in St. Helena. He was 54.

Born on September 1, 1957, in Livermore, California, Richard's childhood was filled with sporting events, playing baseball, skiing, street ball games before dinner, swimming and long afternoons playing in the fields with his siblings.

After graduating from Livermore High School in 1975, Richard went on to California Polytechnic University, where he graduated in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering. In 1997, he received his MBA from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. During his 25+ year career as a power industry professional, Richard worked in the US and Saudi Arabia for General Electric, Calpine and PG&E Energy Services in strategic planning, asset management, project development, construction, acquisitions and finance. For the past ten years of his life, Richard was an asset director for MMR Power Solutions of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, an organization he was deeply devoted to.

Richard traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia. In 1991 he climbed Kala Pitar in Nepal to view Everest, which was a life changing inspiration. In 1996, Richard was living in San Jose when he met his future wife, Jennifer, in St. Helena. He happily relocated and they married in the Napa Valley in 1998. Richard was passionate about St Helena life as well as national and local politics. An avid letter to the editor writer, he was an active member of the St. Helena School Board Recall committee in 2010, served as vice chairman of the Citizen's Oversight Committee and was on the board of directors of the Napa County Tax Payers Association.

Richard's parents, brothers and sister were proud of his many accomplishments and loved him dearly. He loved his wife, Jennifer, and was a true partner in life to her. His son, Nathan, age 11, was the joy of his life and the two of them had great adventures together. Richard, Jennifer and Nathan enjoyed traveling, skiing, hosting regular dinner parties and rooting for the Giants. Richard was an avid volunteer for St. Helena Little League, painting bleachers, umpiring and helping to coach. He was an ingenious handyman, sometimes resupplying at Steve's Hardware several times a day. Richard could build, fix, create, grow, assemble and design almost anything - and he did - with tenacity, energy, generosity and kindness.

He is deeply loved and will forever be remembered by his wife, Jennifer, son Nathan, parents Robert and Virginia Becker of Livermore, Calif., siblings Carl Becker and his partner, Paulo Orfei of Chicago, Il., Mary Becker of Lafayette, Calif. and Robert Becker, Jr. of Occidental, Calif., and his many extended family members and friends.

A private family service will be held this weekend. At a future date to be announced, a celebration of Richard's life will be held to which friends, family and colleagues will be invited. Richard's family is forever grateful to the friends, neighbors and community members who have expressed their condolences and love. The family suggests memorial contributions be sent in Richard's name to the Napa Valley Vine Trail PO Box 93 St Helena, CA 94574 or www.vinetrail.org www.vinetrail.org
