Richard Bierie Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 2, 2012.

Richard E. Bierie, age 86, died unexpectedly of heart failure January 30, 2012, at his home in North Canton, four days short of his 87th birthday. He was born in New Philadelphia, February 3, 1925, to Harry P. and Pauline (Cash) Bierie. The Bierie family moved when Richard was a child to North Canton where he attended North Canton City Schools, graduating from NoCaHi in 1942.

As a teenager, he worked at the North Canton Park Theater, as an usher and rose to become a projectionist, a memory he was proud to recount to friends. He worked a short time for the Hoover Company before enlisting in the U. S. Navy, serving at Pearl Harbor during the remainder of World War II. His name appears on the Hoover War Memorial Plaque recently relocated to Bitzer Park.

After the war, he served in the U. S. Army as a computer programmer where he completed twenty years of active duty including deployment to Florida during the 1961 Cuban Missile Crisis. Subsequent to his active duty service, he became a civilian employee with the U. S. Army for an additional 15 years before retiring in 1980.

Richard was married to the former Janet VanderVeen of Kalamazoo, MI, and had one son, Greg. His wife predeceased him in 1989 while they lived in Denver. After her death, he returned to North Canton and reconnected with old acquaintances and made many new friends.

He is survived by Greg (Barbara) Bierie of Charlo, MT; three grandsons; Brian (Laurie) of Boston; David (Karen) of Washington, DC; and Shawn of Houston; two granddaughters, Nicole of Miami and Stacie of Charlo, MT, one great-grandchild, Cory; and a sister Bette (William) Hammen of North Canton.

There will be no local services. Richard will be cremated and the ashes buried with his wife in Denver. Arrangements under the direction of Karlo-Libby Funeral Home.
