Richard Brenner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 28, 2012.

Mr. Richard Dennis Brenner, 65, died Monday, February 27, 2012 at Moses Cone Hospital. Rich was born in Merchantville, New Jersey on November 24, 1946 . He was preceded in death by his parents Robert A. and Alfreda Brenner. He was a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio where he was student senate president, sports editor of the college newspaper, Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities, and a member of Lamba Chi Alpha fraternity. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Baldwin-Wallace in 1968. He broadcast his first football game at his college over the radio with play-by-play reports in October of 1965, and he spent the summer of 1967, between his sophomore and junior years of college, as a correspondent in Vietnam. He began his fulltime television career in 1975 as a sportscaster at WLVA in Lynchburg, Virginia. He later worked at WAVY in Portsmouth, Virginia, WRAL in Raleigh, WMAQ in Chicago and WTVD in Durham before coming to WGHP Fox 8 in 1987 as a sports anchor.

During his distinguished career he received the Silver Circle Award from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, three Southeast Regional Emmy awards, a National Iris Award, and the Charlie Harville Award. He has interviewed and covered well known people in the world of sports as well as history and through his 34 year broadcasting career, he has mentored countless young aspiring sportscasters and journalists. A long time supporter of soccer in North Carolina at all levels, Rich was honored in 1991 by the NC Youth Soccer Association for outstanding coverage of the sport. He has never met a stranger, and in the world of local television, he has been a constant, dispensing scores and highlights for 21 years. Rich retired on April 18, 2008 and remained very busy as a volunteer on the speaking circuit as well as an emcee at many events in the community. He was a tireless volunteer who donated his time as a tutor to kindergartners at Pilot Elementary School and taught a broadcasting class at Elon University.

He was a Captain in the United States Marine Reserves. In 1972 he entered the 4th Civil Affairs Group located at the Washington, DC Navy Yard. He served as a platoon leader and rose to the rank of Captain, USMCR before leaving that unit in June 1975.

He was presented a Hixon Award by the Gate City Kiwanis Club and Asheboro Kiwanis Club for his help in raising money for a Kiwanis cabin at Victory Junction, and his investment in young people led to an athletic scholarship in his name at UNCG.
A few of Rich's many passions in life included serving veterans, first responders and mentoring youth.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Judy Goodrich Pollard; one son Shawn Douglas Pollard of Greensboro; one daughter and son-in-law Lesley and Nick Nicholson of Greensboro, his beloved grandsons, Tanner and Carson; one brother and sister-in-law, Barry and Donna Brenner of Fairport, NY; one niece Amy Alexander of Dubai; one nephew Christopher Brenner of Fairport, NY and a brother-in-law Carroll Leslie Goodrich and his wife Joanne of Appomattox, Va.

The family will receive friends beginning at 5:00 pm on Friday March 2 at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Funeral Home. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, March 3 at Aycock Auditorium on the UNCG campus at 1:00pm.

Memorials may be made to the War Memorial Foundation (Field of Honor) 600 North Regional Road, Greensboro, NC 27409, Victory Junction at 4500 Adam's Way Randleman, NC 27317 and the Richard Brenner Athletic Scholarship at UNCG , 723 Kenilworth Street, Greensboro, 27402.

My prayers are with you during this time of grief. Rich was a dynamic broadcaster who was sincere and loved his family! I often reflect on the time Lesly was participating in sports and the team won. He discussed it during his newscast. He was so proud and it showed through his tears of joy. I will never forget that. I pray that moments like that embrace your family. Judy & Family,

I meet Rich about a year ago and I was at work at a 911 center, when a friend of mine invited him to stop by and see the center. Me thinking the Rich would never show was very so mistaken when he showed up at our door around 9pm that night. He came in and introduced himself and sat down and visited for a few hours. I was taken back by his personality and was more amazed by the way we quized him on some sports questions and he answered everyone of them. I will never forget him, he was someone you would want to sit down with and just talk all day long with because he was so amazing to just be in the company of. For someone to just take an invite to come by and travel as far as he did and to take the time to just stop and visit left and impression on me i will never forget. May god bless your family during this time of sorrow

Judy and Family,
I'm so sorry to hear the sad news about Rich. He was one of my favorite people most likely because if anyone should be described as “what you see is what you get” it was Rich. He was a "one of a kind" truly genuine person. Although we only saw each other occasionally after high school it was always as if we had just seen each other recently. I always enjoyed our spirited conversations about sports, politics or whatever.

I'll never forget the first time I met him back at Merchantiville High School. As I walked into the gym I heard this booming voice that sounded exactly like Howard Cosell. As it turned out, it was Rich doing play by play of a gym class game imitating Cosell as only Rich could. At the time, although I didn't know it, Rich was preparing for his life's work, or should I say love. My only regret is that Rich never worked in our area where myself and his many friends could have enjoyed his work.

Please accept my condolences and be comforted that he is in a better place.

Judy & Family,

I cannot begin to tell you how sorry I am for your loss. Rich was a true gentleman. I know the first time I met him, I was somewhat intimidated because I grew up watching him on TV. After talking to him a few minutes, I found him to be such an easy going guy. He left an impression on me that I will never forget. It was a pleasure to watch him on TV for 21 years, but it was a true honor to meet him. Not because he had been a fixture on TV, but because he was a veteran, a member of the public safety family, and a man of integrity. You all will be in my thoughts and prayers. Thank you for sharing him with us.

purdy family

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

My heart is heavy now knowing I have lost a friend in the passing of Rich Brenner. I have spoken to him many many times over the past several years. For our ALR alum, you should remember those times when I asked Rich to help us with our Veterans Christmas rides. All though he showed up sick one time he never waivered and helped us to raise an insane amount of money for our veterans. This morning as I look at his name and number on my contacts list, I realize the reality that Rich was the poster child for leaving this place on earth, better than he found it. Rich embodied that philosophy. He touched everybody he came in contact with and I'm proud to call him my friend. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Judy (my co-worker at the sheriff's office) and their entire family.

As we pause and think of Rich, we should also remember the family that sacrificed precious time to share him with all of us. Judy and Family, please know that each tribute to Rich is also a tribute to you as well.

In the coming days there will be many stories told of the good things Rich did that even his family may not know.

A few years ago, I became aware of a young man who had been paralyzed in a automobile accident. He was a high scholl senior, interested in sports and broadcasting. He was in fact doing his high school senior project on those very subjects. I called Rich and he very graciously invited the young man and his parents to FOX 8. The grand tour was given and the staff was encouraging. The next year, the young man entered High Point University to pursue his dream.

Thank you Judy and Family for sharing him with all of us. May God bless and keep you all. You can take comfort in knowing that he finished well!

February 28, 2012

Judy & Family,

We thank God we were so priviledged to know such and kind and giving couple like you and Rich. Frank and I worked with him on many volunteer events. (Operation Smile, Victory Junction, etc.) He never met a stranger and treated everyone the same. I know how he loved you, his children and his grandkids. He loved to talk about them. I remember last August 2011, Frank and I sat with you and Rich at the Carolina Theatre. My grandchildren (twins) Callie and Dakota, were there celebrating their 10th birthday with Eric and the Chiltones. Callie and Dakota were invited to come up on stage and they put on an unbelievable show dancing. Rich was sitting right beside me and Frank and expressed how good they were and he just couldn't believe they had not rehearsed their dance. He loved children and he knew my grandchildren meant the world to me and their parents. He could not have given me a kinder compliment. He was a real family man and truly loved people and loved to help in any way he could reach out the them. It was truly an honor to spend time with you both. We will keep you and your family in our prayers (truly). He has just begun a new journey and you will be reunited again some sweet day. We are here for you in any way we can. May God grant you and your family peace and strength in cherishing the wonderful legacy he left with us all. God Bless.
