He was a wonderful uncle who was not only a great athlete and played professional baseball in the Phillies Organization but he also made prodigious contributions to the youth of Bloomfield via his exceptional dedication as the President of the Babe Ruth Baseball League 19 years despite not having a child in the program. Another aspect of Uncle Homer's life that stands out was his writings which included numerous op-ed publications and an unpublished book he wrote about himself and his families life. He was a truly exceptional man.

I was always grateful for the patience and kindness Mr. Bucco showed me when I was on his Babe Ruth League baseball team. He taught me much about how to play and enjoy the game. I'm glad my younger brother also got to play for him.
I hope Mr. Bucco's family finds comfort knowing how positively he touched the lives of so many of the people who got to know him over the years.

Uncle Homer, I'll always remember you living next door to us at Nanna's house when we where kids. We where one big family in two houses. Sundays where especially fun with most of your brothers and sisters being there. What fantastic meals we used to have with them and our cousins. It was a great way to grow up having family so close. Thank you for being there and helping us when needed.
You are blessed,
Michael

Uncle Homer: The one who saved me from a raging brush fire when I was five years old. Hearing our pleas for help, Uncle Homer came running without hesitation, jumped over the four foot high flames that had surrounded me and carried me out to safety like a sack of flour! The one who played ball with us kids and one day hit a ball so far that it went out of Reinheimer Park, over the back yards and landed on the roof of a house halfway down the block! The uncle who so generously got me a summer job with his company when I was in high school and taught me a few things about working hard and growing up! He was the one who would have a tear in his eye when he listened to beautiful music. The uncle who volunteered his time in the Babe Ruth league not only to teach kids about baseball, but also about life. The one who wrote a book that chronicled the experience of what it was like growing up in a first generation Italian/American family in Newark. Yes, and the one who enjoyed writing all those newspaper articles, but seemed to delight even more when you responded with your own comments to him.
Thanks Uncle Homer, not only for possibly saving my life, but for enriching it with wonderful memories!
Your nephew, Joseph

Mr.Bucco you meant a lot to the youth of Bloomfield. You gave your time and knowledge to us and taught us more than just baseball. You taught us about life and how to treat people with respect and to play sports with respect and sportsmanship. I remember you and my Dad being down North Junior High getting the fields ready for us to play on every night. When my Dad passed away you wrote a beautiful tribute letter in the Bloomfield Life wich I still have and read from time to time. I want to thank you for all you've done for the youth of Bloomfield and for my family. When I think of my youth and growing up in Bloomfield and playing Babe Ruth Baseball you will always be in my thoughts. Condolences to your Wife and family both near and far from the Guardabasco family and the Bloomfield National Babe Ruth family.

I had the honor of working with Homer back in the 80's. He was a true class act and a gentleman. He will always be in my memory.

I played Babe Ruth baseball for Homer for 3 years in the 70s and thought of him often as I later coached my own travel and rec baseball teams for years. He was old school, and that is how I coached my kids too. He taught me a lot, and not just about baseball either. Having respect for yourself and your opponents, dealing with adversity....many lessons learned on the diamond that came in handy later in life.
I would often see Homer's letters to the editor of the Star Ledger and tell my kids that this was my old coach, and what a great man he was. I promised myself I would reach out to him one day to let him know that he had a very positive impact on my life. I am sad I never got that chance, but I want the family to know how much he meant to me, and probably countless others who played for him.
My heartfelt condolences to the Bucco family.
