Richard Henry Joseph Duggan, 95, of Shad Bay passed away at the Veteran's Memorial Hospital on Friday, February 22, 2013 surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Halifax, he was the son of Richard Duggan and Ida Nowe.
A survivor of the Halifax Explosion, Richie spent his life between Halifax and Shad Bay. He was a proud veteran of WWII. Serving as a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy, he raised the flag in St. John's, NF to signify the end of the war. He was a founding member of Legion Branch 153 White's Lake and the Atlantic Beagle Club, Shad Bay. He loved to go in the woods with his beagles and won a number of ribbons. He played baseball on three champion city leagues - Zwicker's Mens Clothing, Gordon B. Isnor, and the St. Pat's Nationals, where he had 19 strike outs. Twice a week, Richie walked between the Halifax Commons and Shad Bay to play ball. He was an active member of the community participating in senior clubs and functions with Mt. Carmel Parish. He was also an avid bowler, playing in many leagues and winning numerous trophies. He worked as a millwright and fine carpenter for CFB Halifax Willow Park, with 35 years of service. It was Richie who framed the large windows for the Armouries when no other carpenter could do the job.
He was a devoted husband of 61 years to wife Esther (Young) of Sydney Mines. He was a loving father to sons, Richard (Veronica), Roger (Linda), Ronald, Glenn (Anna) and daughters Valerie (Wendell) and Darlene; and to his grandchildren Justin, Mitchell, Shannon, Ryan, Michael, Rebecca and Christopher.
He was predeceased by his sister Dorothy (Hugh) Gillis of Shad Bay.
Visitation will be held at Snow's Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Drive, Halifax, Friday, March 1, 2 - 4 pm and 6 - 8 pm.
Funeral service will be held at St. Joseph's Parish in Shad Bay, Saturday, March 2 at 11:30 am. A celebration of his life to follow at St. Joseph's Parish Hall. Burial will be at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Shad Bay.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Holy Cross Cemetery, Shad Bay or the Head & Neck Cancer Family Fund at the QE2. Special thanks to all the staff of the Veteran's Memorial Hospital Cedar Crest 3W for their wonderful care of our father and support to the family.

Sorry I could not make the service. Our deepest condolences to all of you. I remember Uncle Richie's laugh. It was a real belly laugh and it was contagious. We had some happy times visiting Shad Bay when we were kids. Dad and Richie always enjoyed each others company and were good friends. He will be missed but remembered with love and good memories. Take care,
Ava and Randy

For Darlene, family and friends. So very sorry to hear of your dads passing. I know what you are going through and my prayers are with you and your family. In my experience - I have found that it is comforting to know that when a loved one dies they are in a wonderful place where there is no pain and suffering anymore.

Aunt Esther, Val, Dar, Rick, Roger, Ronnie & Glen:
We are so sorry to hear about Uncle Ritchie. You are in our thoughts and prayers. It is difficult to lose someone you love. Thanks for sharing your photos. The pictures of the beagles brought back memories of visiting the Duggans when we were children and seeing the "dancing beagles". We loved them and for some reason we believed their purpose was dancing not hunting!
