Boulder had royalty in its midst for years and didn't know it. Richard Ellis, known as Rick Ellis, who passed away in Boulder after a long battle with cancer, inherited the Scottish baronet's title of Sir Roderick Dhu, one of the characters in Sir Walter Scott's poem, "Lady of the Lake." He grew up in Brazil and graduated from high school in San Diego, where he lettered in basketball and football.
He joined the Air Force in 1962 and was stationed at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver. On January 10, 1967, he married Marilyn Sue Ellis, who preceded him in death on July 3, 2010. Before retiring in 1996 he worked for many years at IBM and as a food broker servicing the Front Range.
Rick was an avid supporter of the University of Colorado football team and the Denver Broncos. He was devoted to his dogs and enjoyed camping, fishing, and riding his motorcycle "trike" with his wife, Marilyn.
Rick was a legend in his neighborhood of Heatherwood, and dearly loved by many. In wintertime, he could be found snow-blowing his neighbors' sidewalks, shoveling out stranded RTD buses, and decorating his home with thousands of Christmas lights. He would also dress up as Santa Clause and pass out candy canes to the elementary students. He was famous for his uncanny ability to always remember birthdays and anniversaries of his family and friends. His big-hearted generosity and buoyant personality will be missed.
Rick is survived by three children, Lauren Ellis Galey of Boulder, Pam Ellis Ortega of Lafayette and Chester Paul Ellis of Austin, Texas. He is also survived by his sister, Pearl Ellis of Ramona, California, and five grandchildren, Lisbeth, Mariah, Cristian, Ty and Josh.
The public is invited to a memorial service to honor Rick Ellis' life on Tuesday, November 9, at 2pm at Crist Mortuary in Boulder.

"Dear Marilyn & Rick's Family, Just a note to let you know that we have kept all of you in our prayers. It has been a long haul. We miss them to much...." Edie & Don Larkin (Wenatchee, WA)
