Richard was born to the late Richard Clarence Lewis and to Ira Carolyn Bickers July 13, 1942 in Memphis, Tenn. Richard received a Bachelors of Science Degree in Psychology and Biology from the University of Memphis in 1965, where he received a Secondary Education Teacher's Certificate in Biology. In addition, he attended the University of Memphis Graduate School in Education and the YMCA Law School in Nashville and completed appraisal courses with the American Institute. He married his loving wife Sherry in 1989 and they spent 25 wonderful years together as husband and wife.

Always one to live life to the fullest, Richard could usually be found passing his time at the country club playing a round of golf and enjoying lively conversation with his many friends. Richard also greatly enjoyed traveling with Sherry making their way around the globe from Africa to the Caribbean and everywhere in between. Richard was known for his love of the outdoors. One of his greatest passions was dove and quail hunting second only to golf, which he enjoyed for many years.

Richard enjoyed a long and successful professional career, encompassing many different paths. Richard worked his way through employment as Director of Tennessee Real Property and the Department of Finance and Administration before spending two years as the Principle Broker for John W. Galbreath & Co. Following that venture, Richard enjoyed three years as Assistant Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Revenue and Executive Assistant to the Governor for Policy and Planning and Director of Governor's State Planning Office. Richard also acted as a board member of the Nashville Sports Authority Board. His most profitable venture was his development of Federal Express distribution centers all across the country.

Richard was exceedingly active in his pursuits, among them being his membership and previous memberships of the Tennessee International Trade and Export Development Board, the National Association of Real Estate and his beloved memberships at the Richland Country Club and the Nashville Gun Club.

Richard is survived by his loving wife Sherry Lindahl Lewis of Brentwood. He is also survived by his mother, Ira Carolyn Bickers of Memphis; his two children, John Lewis (Rebecca) of Cedar Hill, and Tanya Lewis of Sedona; his sister Linda Jones (Ken) of Memphis; his grandchildren, Madison Lewis (Madison) of Boone and Alexander Lewis and Nathaniel Lewis of Cedar Hill.

The family would like to thank his kind and diligent caregivers Helen Hendrick and Elaine Sandson, as well as acknowledge the many others at Woodcrest at Blakeford Nursing Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Nashville Humane Society. Donations can be made at www.NashvilleHumane.org.
