Obituary

Richard J. Marshall 89, of Douglas, Arizona passed away on June 21, 2014 in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was born on September 18, 1924 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to Mathias and Mary. Richard graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School, and was drafted into the Army during WWII. He was drafted into the Army in February of 1943 and discharged in March of 1945. He was part of the 90th Infantry Division (Tough Ombres); 359th Infantry Regiment; 2nd Battalion; F Company. His company was involved in the liberation of Periers, France. Richard J. Marshall
89, of Douglas, Arizona passed away on June 21, 2014 in
Scottsdale, Arizona. He was born on September 18, 1924
in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to Mathias and Mary. Richard
graduated from Lancaster Catholic High School,
and was drafted into the Army during WWII. He was
drafted into the Army in February of 1943 and discharged
in March of 1945. He was part of the 90th Infantry
Division (Tough Ombres); 359th Infantry Regiment;
2nd Battalion; F Company. His company was involved in
the liberation of Periers, France. He was severely wounded
in action while advancing through the hedgerows on
July 26, 1944 near Periers (Chemin de l'hopital) and was
awarded the Purple Heart for his wounds. He received the Combat Infantry
Badge, two Bronze Stars with V (valor) for his actions in combat and for his
participation in stopping a German tank. Like most veterans of WWII, he was
truly humbled and embarrassed to be considered a "hero", yet was tremendously
proud to be part of the 359th. Richard went on to receive his Bachelors
in Education at Kutztown University, and his Masters from Temple University.
Richard married Betty in 1948 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. They moved to
Douglas, Arizona in 1954 where Richard was a long time educator and soon
became the Principal of Clawson Elementary School and Stevenson Elementary
School. He is survived by his wife Betty, their sons; Steve (Linda) of
Bisbee, Arizona, Tom (Diana) of Sparks, Nevada, Curtis (Kay) of Papua, Indonesia,
Rich (Jerry) of Scottsdale, Arizona, grandchildren; Chris, Alexis, Jenna,
Caitlyn, Alissa, Dustin, great-grandchildren; Bostyn, and Luna. Rosary will be
held at 10:00 AM, Friday, June 27, 2014 and Mass to follow at 10:30 AM at Our
Lady of Perpetual Help located at 7655 E. Main St. Scottsdale, Arizona 85251.
Funeral Procession will commence to National Cemetery of Arizona 23029 N.
Cave Creek Rd. Phoenix, AZ 85024 for Military Honors and Committal Service.
