Biography

Richard L. Powell, 73, of Henderson, Nevada, passed away on February 23, 2013 due to complications of ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease. Dick was born in Rochester, New York. He graduated from high school in Tucson, Arizona and received a BA in Political Science from California State University Sacramento. Dick served in the Army in Germany for four years. In 1967, Dick met the love of his life, Nancy Nagy. They were both attending Michigan State University and working at The Jack Tar. They were together for over 45 years. Dick enjoyed a long career in the Hospitality Industry employed with The Coffee Tree, Nut Tree, Lawry’s Restaurants, Gladstone’s, and Brad Metzger Restaurant Solutions. For Dick, work was a place of growth, excellence, creativity, connection, service to the greater community, and the family community of coworkers. Dick was a catalyst of growth and innovation always striving for and achieving greater goals. The list of people who call Dick or “Mr. Powell” a mentor and friend is great, and his impact and legacy will live on. Dick loved to travel and enjoyed taking his family and wife on many exciting well-planned excursions and many spontaneous adventures. He loved the theater. All seasons of his life were surrounded with music and great food. Dick was an avid sports fan and traveled back to Chicago for weekends of basketball and hockey with old friends. Richard L. Powell, 73, of Henderson, Nevada, passed away on February 23, 2013 due to complications of ALS, Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Dick was born in Rochester, New York. He graduated from high school in Tucson, Arizona and received a BA in Political Science from California State University Sacramento. Dick served in the Army in Germany for four years.

In 1967, Dick met the love of his life, Nancy Nagy. They were both attending Michigan State University and working at The Jack Tar. They were together for over 45 years.

Dick is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughter, Michelle Hanson, her husband, Scott Hanson, and their two children, Mark and Jake; daughter, Dawn Powell, her husband, Tom Crenshaw and their two children, Chloe and Violet; and younger brother, Jerry Powell, and his wife, Marie Powell.

Funeral arrangements will be held at Palm Eastern Mortuary and Cemetery, 7600 S. Eastern Avenue, Las Vegas, Nevada 89123.

The family suggests that memorials be made to ALS of Nevada, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and the PVA (Paralyzed Veterans of American), all which were invaluable in their support of Dick and his family.
