Richard Eugene Romei, Jr., of Leeds, AL, slipped the bonds of life at age 56 on Thursday, August 16, 2012 at Brookwood Hospital,
Birmingham.

Richard was born in Birmingham, AL on October 12, 1955. He is the
eldest son of Frances Dean Costanza and the late Richard E. Romei, Sr. He
was the very loved stepson of Vincent J. Costanza, husband of Frances
Dean Costanza and Linda D. Romei-Kirkland. He was the oldest brother of five brothers and one sister.

Richard graduated from St. Francis Xavier Elementary School, 1971, attended John Carroll High School his Freshman year switched to and graduated from, Leeds High School 1974. From his earliest youth he was an athlete who grew into an outstanding football player. Though he played center, he was known for his running ability and was nicknamed "Crazy Legs" and "Italian Stallion." Later in life he would apply his competitive athletic skills to political debate. His arguments were always intense, but lined with a sportsman's sense of fair play.

Richard married Debbie Leigh Davis of Leeds in 1989. As a member of the Merchant Marines he captained logistics transport ships for off-shore oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico for many years. He was known for his leadership skills and bravery in dangerous waters and demanding duties. His crews and colleagues had immense respect for him and enjoyed his easy-going manner, humor and knowledge. They trusted him with their lives. After he retired from his duties as a captain, Richard returned to Birmingham and became a master plumber.

Richard had a life blessed by love for and from others. He took his role of "oldest brother" very seriously and never failed to remind his siblings that he was the "oldest." His satirical sense of humor captured irony perfectly and he had a unique way of clipping the wings of those who were tempted to fly toward arrogance or egoism. He was a man who was comfortable in his own skin, knew exactly who he was, and found happiness in the present by not focusing on the past or dreaming of the future; his life was here and now with those whom he befriended and loved.

Richard did more than honor his father and mother; he loved them with all his heart. His mother's grief is tempered only by her deep faith in God and the love of her other children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was an understanding, patient and loving husband to Debbie. He eaves four children and three grandchildren whom he loved from the purest part of his gentle soul. As a father he did not hover over or control his children, but instead guided them, taught them, supported and encouraged them, and always demonstrated his love for them. He succeeded in becoming the father he always hoped to be, and his children and grandchildren will miss him beyond measure.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie Leigh Davis Romei; daughters: Stacey Adaway Beane (Jeff), Kristen Nicole Gray; and Lindsey Danielle Romei; son, Lance Corporal James Richard Anthony Romei; Mother, Frances Dean Costanza; Grandchildren: Summer Gray, Ricky Gray and Conner Beane; Siblings: Christopher Romei (Mary Lou), P. David Romei, Mark J. Romei(Edie), Phillip S. Romei (Susan); Angela Romei Forrest (Douglas), and Matthew S. Romei (Laura) and several nieces and nephews.

Richard is predeceased by his father Richard E. Romei, Sr., and his loving grandparents, Paul F. and Stephanie (Friend) Romei, David Anderson Dean and Mary (Wilson) Dziubinski.

Funeral Service will be Monday, August 20, 2012 at 11:00 Am. at Kilgroe Funeral Home with burial to follow in Forest Crest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Sunday, August 19, 2012.

The Lord created Richard's soul, breathed life into it, and has now
taken it to restore it to eternity with Him. We thank God for
Richard and believe that his soul now rests in eternity with our
