Richard Schindel Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 30, 2013.

Richard Baker Schindel, 83, of Georgetown, Texas, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 26, 2013 at Hospice Austin's Christopher House. He was born November 12, 1929 in Hagerstown, Maryland to Madeline and Joseph Schindel.

Richard (Dick) grew up a carefree life in Hagerstown, graduating from Hagerstown High School in 1947. Following high school, he enlisted in the nascent Air Force and served his country honorably in Texas and Korea from 1950 through 1953. After his time in the Air Force, he returned to Hagerstown to begin his career with the Schindel Rohrer Hardware Store, a hardware wholesaler, where he served as Chief Accountant until the business closed in 1984. Dick was a long standing member of the Elks Lodge, First Christian Church and First Hose Company, all of Hagerstown. He was also a member of the informal "Library News Review" at the Hagerstown Library.

Late in life, Dick struck out for Texas in order to be close to his son and family. He spent the last 6 years of his life in Georgetown, Texas, making a great number of new friends and experiencing a whole new lease on life. It was at this time that he adopted his dear canine friend Sadie, who became his constant companion. The friendships he developed in Texas sustained the last years of his life and helped him enjoy an entire new set of adventures. He was very grateful for this time.

Dick was preceded in death by his mother and father, Madge and Joe, as well as his brother Ed (Bette), all of Hagerstown, MD. He was also preceded by his former wife of 21 years, Trudy. He is survived by his sister, Patricia Renn (Tom) of Virginia Beach, VA and his three children and spouses, Kate and Charles Benson of Hagerstown, MD, Claire and William Parks of Tuscaloosa, AL and Kellie and Rick Schindel of Round Rock, TX. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Katie and Samantha Parks of Tuscaloosa, AL as well as Brendan, Conor, Patrick and Tiernan Schindel, of Round Rock, TX were the pride of his later years.

Visitation will be held October 1st from 6-8 pm at Cook Walden Davis Funeral Home in Georgetown, Texas and the funeral service will be at 10 am on October 2nd, also at Cook Walden Davis Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice Austin at Christopher House, 2820 E. MLK Jr. Blvd, Austin, Texas 78702.

Arrangements by Cook-Walden/Davis Funeral Home, 2900 Williams Drive, Georgetown, Texas 78628 (512)863-2564.

We were very sorry to read about Dick's passing. We have fond memories of Dick and Trudy as their children grew up with our two sons. May God comfort Kate, Claire and Rick in the loss of their father.

Dick was at the top of my list of favorite patrons at the Washington County Free Library in Hagerstown, and for many of the other reference librarians as well. I looked forward to seeing him every morning, along with Bill Ridenour and Kevin Barkman. I will cherish my visit with him when we came to Austin. Such a gentleman; I will miss him.

Our thoughts are with Kate, Claire and Rick and families at this sad time. Your Dad and Mom always treated our daughter like their own when you all were growing up in Saint James Village. These memories and good times are with us forever and will help get through this difficult time. Just know that you all were there for him when he needed it most. Bless you.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family. Your Dad always treated me like family growing up as a child in St. James Village. My favorite memories are of him and your Mom steaming lobsters in the kitchen and eating them on a blanket in the back yard, eating peas and mint jelly, playing croquet, and him taking us Christmas shopping in Downtown Hagerstown while he worked in his office at Schindel/Rohrer. We felt so grown up. I will treasure these memories and hope your memories provide you comfort during this difficult time. God Bless you All.
