Richard Sevic Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 2, 2014.

RICHARD ANDREW SEVIC
East Lansing

Richard Andrew Sevic, age 84, of East Lansing, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 31, 2014, following a brief illness. Richard is survived by Irmgard Sevic, his loving and caring wife of forty years; children John Velten, John F. (Helen) Sevic, Mike (Mona) Sevic, and Natasha (Ron Jr.) Freitas; grandchildren, John Velten, Jennifer Sevic, David Velten, Gabriella Freitas, Sophia Sevic, Roman Freitas, Leo Freitas, and Max Freitas; sister, Catherine Visota.

Following service in United States Air Force, Richard graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering. Richard spent his entire career with the Lansing Board of Water of Light, Lansing's municipally-owned utility, where he eventually ran the electric utility business unit. Responsible for planning the future of Lansing's post-war electricity system, Richard designed the 138 kV transmission network encircling Lansing, supplying electrons to its many residents and factories, including the various Oldsmobile plants in Lansing at the time.

A lifelong fan of his beloved MSU Spartans, Richard, and his sister Kay Visota, seldom missed a game in East Lansing. Richard was also an avid outdoorsman, having fished or hunted from the Florida Keys to Canada's Bow River, with his lifelong fishing buddy Jack Kutchins.

The Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, August 5, 2014, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 955 Alton Road, East Lansing, MI. Interment will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Lansing, MI. The family will receive friends 5-8 PM Monday with the Rosary prayed at 7:30 PM at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E. Grand River, East Lansing.

Those desiring may make contributions to US Fund for UNICEF, 125 Maiden Lane, New York, NY 10038.

I didn't know Dick well, but I will certainly miss his friendly smile and kind words at the MSU coaches' club luncheons. He was a true Spartan, and Dick's family is in my thoughts and prayers this week.

Rich was a good man and a great friend. I will be forever grateful to him for introducing me to fly fishing and the South Branch of the Au Sable River.
