RICHARD (DICK) MEIKLE WAINWRIGHT
October 7, 1923 - April 25, 2014

Parents – Robert Williams and Vallie Mae (Littlefield) Wainwright
His family moved to Chico, CA when he was young and Dick attended school there. When he graduated high school he joined The Army Air Corps. He was stationed in England and served as a radar mechanic on the bombers until the war ended. Dick attended Chico State College and graduated in 1949. In June of 1948, Dick married Julia Kuhnen.

While in college, Dick and his brother John owned and operated a Shell Service Station, adding a second station after college. In 1955 Dick and John and their families moved to Merced to join the real estate business with their brother Bill. The Wainwrights were active for many years in real estate sales and later in subdividing land and building homes and apartments primarily in Merced. Dick coordinated and supervised the construction end of the business while his brother John handled the sales end. Dick's college years as high hurdler became real apparent during these construction years, as all subcontractors will testify that he was "hard to keep up with" in stride. He would walk from home to home during the construction and no one could keep up with his pace. Dick always had a nice way of asking someone to do something for him, and every subcontractor was happy to do whatever was asked of them because of his kind heart.

Dick was President of the Board of Realtors in 1967, a past President of the Merced Golf and Country Club, a member of the Monterey Peninsula Golf and Country Club, and a member of Kiwanis.

Dick loved to golf and traveled all around playing different courses. He was also an avid skier and enjoyed being the first one on the slope in the morning and the last one off at the end of the day. His love for the sport was shared with his sons. He also enjoyed taking his family on trips to Santa Cruz in the early years and on various Cruises to Hawaii and to the Caribbean more recently.

Dick's smile and his gentle demeanor will be truly missed by all who he touched.

Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Julia of 65 years; his parents; his 3 brothers, Bob, Bill and John; and two sisters, Betty Wiebe and Frances Bailey.

Dick and Julia had 4 sons, Pete (Vicky), Bill (Sharon), Dennis (Chrissy), and Eric (Cathy); grandchildren, Chris, Peter, Melissa, Halley, Dennis, Danny, David & Eric; and 8 great grandchildren.

A special thank you to our parent's caregivers, Angela, Richard, Anthony, Franky and Lytania for the special care that was given to both our parents.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Salvation Army, 1440 W. 12th St., Merced, CA 95341 or a charity of your choice.

A private graveside service will be arranged by Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home on May 7, 2014. Services will be held at the Central Presbyterian Church, 1920 Canal St., Merced, CA 95340 at 1:00pm followed by a celebration of life at the Hoffmeister Hall directly across from the church.

Arrangements under the direction of Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home, Merced, CA.
