Richard Whitney Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 26, 2014.

Richard "Dick" Whitney, 82, of St. Simons Island, GA and formerly Hopkinton, Massachusetts, died Thursday, June 26, 2014 at Marshes Edge on St. Simons Island. Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at St. Simons United Methodist Church with Rev. Marcia Cochran officiating. Inurnment will follow in Christ Church Cemetery. Born October 9, 1931 in Ayer, Massachusetts to the late Herbert D. and Ruth C. Whitney, he was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy and a retired commercial developer. Mr. Whitney had been a resident of Glynn County for the past 35 years and was a member of St. Simons United Methodist Church. A successful entrepreneur, Mr. Whitney graduated from General Motors Institute and used that training to begin his own business as well as several real estate development ventures. He would tell you that his greatest career satisfaction came from seeing those he mentored go on to start their own businesses. While he loved his work, he cherished his family and his church and enjoyed spending time flying, boating and, in his later years, RVing. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Barbara B. Whitney of St. Simons Island, two children, Rhonda Lidstone and husband Jim of Macon, and Dana Whitney and wife Lisa of Fayette, Maine, 5 grandchildren, Kristen Howell and husband Thomas, Jennifer Goldsberry and husband, J.P., Meghan Whitney, Marissa Whitney and Thayer Whitney, a great grandson, Tucker Whitney, a sister, Martha Davis of Nashua NH, step sister, Jane Murray of Shirley, MA, step brothers, Jeff Murray of Ashland, NH and Steve Murray of Nashua, NH, and half sister Ruth Ellen Whitney of Nashua, NH. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Simons United Methodist Church, Alzheimer's of Glynn/Brunswick, and Hospice of the Golden Isles. Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home has charge of arrangements. www.edomillerandsons.com
