Dr. Robert Carroll Newberry, 73, of Frisco, TX, passed away on Friday, June 16, 2017 due to complications of pancreatic cancer.
Carroll is survived by his wife Jacqueline of nearly 49 years. Other survivors include their daughter Catherine (Brad) Thompson from McKinney, TX, and son Jonathan (Jill) Newberry from Cedar Rapids, IA. Grandchildren include Amelia and Ella Thompson and Mason, Max, and Mallie Newberry. He is also survived by his brother, Norman Newberry and family of Mobile, AL as well as his mother-in-law Marie (Virgil) Shirley of Dry Prong, LA. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Artie Newberry.
Dr. Newberry was born on February 26, 1944 in Ryan, Oklahoma. He graduated with honors (Magna Cum Laude) from Southwestern State College in Weatherford, Oklahoma with a double major in Chemistry and Biology. He subsequently attended and received his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1969. This training was followed by a total of 9 years of service in the United States Army, including an internship at Brooke Army Medical Center (Fort Sam Houston, TX), a tour of duty as both a Battalion Surgeon and Commander in the 9th Medical Dispensary (Aschaffenburg Germany), medical residency training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (Brooke Army Medical Center, Fort Sam Houston), and an assignment as a staff pathologist at Darnall Army Hospital (Ft. Hood, TX). During his service in the military, he achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Following these years of military training and service, Dr. Newberry practiced pathology for 30 additional years in the civilian sector, holding private practice positions in Texarkana, TX (1978-1980), Bowling Green, KY (1980-1991), and Stillwater, OK (1991-2008). After retiring from pathology, he continued working, primarily performing disability evaluations for the VA and the states of Texas and Oklahoma.
Carroll and Jacqueline married in 1968. Their daughter Catherine was born in 1975. Their son Jonathan was born in 1980. Jacqueline remembers Carroll as "the love of her life". Carroll's children remember him as a wise, kind, and supportive father who provided an extra measure of anything needed for them to pursue their interests and goals.
Carroll was a multi-talented individual who excelled at many things, especially cooking. He loved to bring people together with this talent and was passionate about being hospitable. He was a thoughtful individual who provided generously to his family, friends, and anyone in his circle of influence. He was an active and dedicated member within Churches of Christ during his lifetime, serving as an elder, teacher, song leader, and deacon.
A memorial service to celebrate his life is planned for Friday, June 30 at 11:00 am. This will take place at Stonebriar Funeral Home 10375 Preston Road, Frisco, TX 75034.

Dear Jackie, I am so sorry to hear of Carroll's passing. I was a college student at the Stillwater church of Christ and you and Carroll were so wonderful to invite a group of us into your home for a meal (maybe 2003?) and to have some time with a family. Not only that, but while my parents were visiting from Vermont, Carroll gave us some advice on my dad's heart disease (which doctor to see, etc). Jackie, words cannot express how thankful I am for you and your husband's hospitality during this time when I was so far away from my own family. You may remember me as Katie Finnegan from Vermont. I'm now Dr. Katie Johnson (we married in 2006, just after I graduated from OSU), went to vet school and are now living in Idaho with my husband and daughter. I think of you and your husband often and am so sad to find this news of his passing. We hope to provide the same hope and light to young people in our community here. Sending love and prayers to you. In Christ, Katie

Dr. Newberry was one of the most charismatic and humorous people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. He took me under his wing and made sure I was never starving when I first moved out on my own, bringing me leftovers just about every week (Jackie, I can still taste your spicy meatloaf!) The first thing he would do when he came in every week was ask me how my pet snake Carl was doing and the status of my love life, which I know was full of entertainment for him! When he finally got around to setting up his Facebook page, I remember how happy he was to be able to see pictures of his grandkids. He was the definition of what a doctor should be: caring, funny, and full of stories. Our patients loved him and the staff all appreciated his dark, twisted sense of humor. Even when I left the clinic and did a stint in luxury property management, he would still come and see me (and bring me leftovers) at my new office, in which he would of course always come at the worst possible times! Dr. Newberry is someone I will never forget and I wish nothing but the best for his family and especially for Jackie. They say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach...and I honestly felt as if it were my own grandparents home cooking that I was eating. I am sorry to hear of his passing so late and I regret that I became so wrapped up in my own life that I didn't reach out to him before he passed. Any doctors I work for in the future will be held to the standards set by Dr. Newberry. He was a warm spirit and there will always be a place in my heart for him.....and in my stomach for their wonderful meatloaf.

Jackie. Shocked to hear of carroll's death. I grew up with him in Temple, OK & we were good friends. Our parents were both teachers. You visited us in Marietta, GA probably 20 years ago & I visited him at couple of high school reunions, last in about 2012. Have enjoyed reading these memories of Carroll. Sorry we couldn't have been more involved in last 50+ years. God's blessings on your life going forward

Carroll Newberry was a fine Christian man. I got to know him many years ago when he and the young family lived in Bowling Green, Kentucky. We've had almost no contact since then, but I never forgot him. He had a great disposition and a not too subtle sense of humor. May God bless Jackie and the rest of Carroll's family. So sorry to hear of your loss, Jackie. What a shock. Always remember Carrol about his wisdom. And constantly reflect on our time traveling Europe together. BTW, last time I was there there weren't any "finkles" in the fields. What laughs we had.

So sorry to hear through Gene of Carroll's passing. Both of you have a special place in our hearts. We have so many precious memories. I remember especially those of our European trip with you. Remember how I dropped my journal down the elevator shaft and Gene and Carroll had to go down into basement of our pension to get it. And while they were gone the wardrobe fell on you, Jackie! AndI had to tip it back up so you could get out from under it!
Then when you moved back to the US, Carroll made spaghetti with the pasta maker he had bought while we were in Italy and serenaded us after dinner with a classical guitar set. You are bothe precious souls!!!
Blessings and Hugs,

We will always remember Carroll for the NT Bible he gave for baby-sitting Catherine. This was in March 1980 when Jonathan was born. Carroll was such a unique person and a special Christian friend. Miz Trapp and Jim.
