Robert Trego Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 13, 2017.

Robert Edward Trego was born February 28, 1936, in Loogootee, Indiana, and died May 11, 2017, in The Villages, Florida after a lengthy fight with several serious illnesses. He was born to Robert Lee Trego and Bernice Bridget Brown. He had an older sister, Evelyn, and two younger brothers, Gary and Tom, all whom are deceased.

He grew up in the Loogootee and Crane areas of Martin County, Indiana, graduating from Loogootee High School in 1954. He served in the United States Navy from 1954-1958. He attended Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana, receiving B.S. and M.S degrees in Education. Ed cherished his lifelong friendships and memories with his Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity Brothers. He taught in the Vigo County School System (Indiana) for thirty-six years. He began his teaching career for the VCSC in 1962 at Otter Creek Jr. High. His skill set led to his being ask by the VCSC to start the Pre Vocational Education Program for underprivileged students at Gerstmeyer High School. He taught at North High School during its inaugural year. He then returned to Otter Creek Jr. High until 1987 when he moved to West Vigo Middle School as boy's Counselor and Dean of Students. Ed coached several years of baseball, basketball and cross country at Otter Creek, Glenn and Gerstmeyer. He taught driver's education during the summer for several years. He loved baseball and coached teams every summer during the 60s and 70s. "Mr. Trego" was known and liked throughout the years by hundreds of former students and he had wonderful memories of them throughout the rest of his life.

After retiring from teaching in 1998, he and his wife moved to The Villages, Florida, where they have lived since 2000 with their beloved little dog, Zoe.

Ed married first, Donna Shumpert, and was the father of two children, Stephen Robert Trego (Courtney) of Bradenton, Florida and Jane Elizabeth Trego (Mike Pfister) of Zionsville, Indiana. Ed married second, Mary Louise Walton Harding, in 1985, and was step-father to Lori Lee Meyers of Blackwood, New Jersey, and Lance Joseph Harding (Nancy) of Los Angeles, California. There are seven grandchildren, Tatum and Murphy Trego, Jack and Will Pfister, Vanessa and Hope Harding, and Tricia Meyers. There is one great grandson, Talon Sacchetti.

There will be a Memorial Mass at St. Timothy's Catholic Church in The Villages, Florida, June 5th, 2017, at 8:30 A.M. Burial will be in the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida, at a later date.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, please donate to St. Jude Research Center or the National Alzheimer's Association.

Ed & I were stationed on Midway Island in the late 50's for 18 mos. He befriended me when I arrived on the island and that friendship lasted until 5/11/2017. I miss my ole buddy! Mary Lou, Ed mentioned you almost daily on Midway. He was always a very decent and reliable friend.

So sorry to read of your loss. My husband and I both taught social studies with Ed at Otter Creek Jr. High in Terre Haute for many years. Over that time we shared many "war stories" of our teaching experiences. Please accept our condolences and warmest thoughts for all.

R.I.P. Ed. As an active member, you were a mentor for our pledge class at Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity in 1961 at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana. I remember you being at the fraternity house and giving us brotherly advice and good fellowship as pledges.
