I can't pretend to have known Bert as well as many, many others. We were casual acquaintances with shared interests on the quirkier side of life (wrestling, Simpsons, He-Man). I only knew Bert from working with his mom, Laura, at LFCC. She was still there the first ten months of my employment, and she made working there so much fun. I knew nothing when I started there, and she helped me a lot. Patient, kind, goofball sense of humor. So it totally made sense when I met Bert that he was her son. When I heard of Bert's passing, all I could think is what a kind and gentle soul he always was to me, and how my heart ached for Laura and the rest of Bert's family. There aren't many superlatives I can use to describe Bert that those who knew him better didn't use today at his memorial. Bert was so unique. So talented. A peaceful, wandering soul. My last memory of Bert was being on 29 driving home. Anyone who has encountered me on the road and tried to get my attention, knows it is a near impossible task. I keep laser focus, and I refuse to be baited or acknowledge other drivers. So I'm heading towards the Braggs Corner intersection and a truck keeps pacing me. I speed up, it speeds up. I slow down, it slows down. Finally it starts honking, and I'm about ready to hit my breaking point. I look over and roll down my window getting ready to break down and verbally spar and there is Bert yelling "Hey Johnny! How you liking Culpeper?!?" And then he sped off. I wish I'd gotten to know him better, when I first moved here we made plans a few times, and they fell through, and eventually we just lost touch outside of the stray comment every so often. That's my loss. I've been turning 40 since I was 24 and Bert was forever young. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. I hope they can find solace in all the great times with such a one of a kind soul.

My deepest sympathies to the Leftwich & Maddox families. I realize there are no words that I can say to ease your pain but please know you are being loved and prayed for. I will cherish my memories of little Bert riding on the back of the bike on so many of our Culpeper bike rides. He will be forever cherished for the kind and gentle spirit that he always was and always will be.

Laura and Family,

I am so very sorry for the loss of your beloved Bert. He was a dear person and a light in the lives of everyone who knew him. A mother's love is immeasurable, as is her grief. My heart goes out to you, most especially, Laura. Please take comfort in knowing that those we love never truly leave us. They only go on ahead of us to wait until we are one day joined together again. To the entire Leftwich and Maddox families, and to all who loved him so dearly, I wish you peace and comfort at this most difficult time. God bless.
