Age 68
Of Roseville, MN
Died on March 14, 2015, at his home in the presence of his family in hospice care. He was born November 20, 1946, in Steubenville, Ohio, to Parents, Robert Leroy Clegg & Adele May McMillin. First-born & older brother to Susan, John, Chelsea & Cary, he lived in rural eastern Ohio in his primary school years before his parents took up residence in Toronto, Ohio, where he graduated high school in 1964. An excellent student, he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute to study Math & Engineering, and involved himself in the Civil Rights Movement as well as anti-war efforts. Happenstance moved him to Minnesota, where he completed alternative service on conscientious objector status as a mental health worker at the University of Minnesota. He would also graduate from the U of M with a B.A. in Psychology in 1973, but it was his work with contract negotiations at the hospital that jumpstarted his career. He caught the attention of AFSCME employee Bernie Brommer & joined AFSCME thereafter. He worked as a Union Representative for over 25 years, working especially closely with Locals 22 & 3141. He was known in his workplace for expert analytical skills with contract language, and a deft wit that made him the go-to toastmaster at internal AFSCME events. He was a lover of sports, literature, and poetry, and maintained a staunch DFL political viewpoint throughout his life. A believer in grass roots efforts and advocacy for those who need a voice, he was always willing to help where help was needed. He was married three times (La Verne Hairston, Roxanne Christianson & Georgia Amey) producing five children: Zac (Libby), Justin (Paula), Carl, Alan & Glenna & Six Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Wife, Georgia (5/29/2008). In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to your favorite environmentalist organization are preferred. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 28, at 3:00 p.m. at Wulff Funeral Home, 1485 White Bear Avenue in St. Paul. Memorial Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. with light refreshments to follow.

To Bob's family:
I'm sorry but I only learned about Bob's death today, when I was looking for his email.
He was truly a class act - a kind and caring person. Bob's family and friends are in my thoughts and prayers over his death. I will miss him and his commitment to social justice.

Bob and I had known each other for almost 30 years. We attended AFSCME events, played golf every summer and fall, started The October Cup, and then travelled every year to some cool destination to play golf from sun up to sun down for five days.
We played, we drank, we talked, we argued, and we prayed when Bob had his heart attack on a golf trip to Arizona. I couldn't be at the memorial on Saturday because I was on that same annual golf trip in Tucson. Chris Hanson and I toasted Bob and then we were quiet. I know he is in a better place. Jim Gambone

My condolences to Bob's family and relatives. I met Bob at Virginia Tech and was influenced in his discussions at our TUMS (Tech United Ministries) sessions on civil rights, Vietnam War, and Women's Rights. After moving to Washington, DC in 1969, I was a frequent visitor to his and La Verne' s apartment as I pursued my conscientious objection case. Later I joined him and friends in Minneapolis in our SpaceCrafts candle making venture before departing in 1971. Bob, sorry I never returned your astronomy book I borrowed. His sense of humor and wit is missed.

My deepest sympathy to Bob's siblings and Bob's children.
Bob was a classmate and one of my closest friends at Toronto High School. His intelligence and wit made him a special person. Bob loved sports and participated in football, baseball and track. I can remember Bob's football coach nicknaming him "Shakespeare". It was always great to see him at our class reunions, especially, our most recent one. He will be missed by many. My wife, Chris, also sends her condolences to Bob's family.

I worked with Bob on AFSCME political action in the 1980s. He was an individual who put his heart into whatever cause he supported. I hadn't known of his conscientious objector service in the Vietnam War era but I'm not at all surprised. It was so much like Bob. He will be long remembered by those of us who worked with him.
