Robert M. "Bob" Goldsmith passed away April 17, 2014 at St Pat's hospital. He was born on April 5, 1927 in Lake Charles where he lived for 87 years. He was the son of Dr. Ben and Florence Goldsmith, father of Leslie Goldsmith Katz and Matt Goldsmith, (mother Shirley Landsman Goldsmith, deceased) and loving husband of Elizabeth Partridge Goldsmith. He had four fantastic grandchildren, Lindsay Katz, Jeff Katz, Stephanie Gossman Bianchi, and Michelle Gossman. Other survivors include step daughter Melissa Gossman and husband Bryan, son-in-law David Katz, and nephews Doug, Gregg, and Randy Lipton. He was pre-deceased by his sister Marilyn Goldsmith Lipton and husband Donn as well as Shirley Landsman Goldsmith.
Bob graduated Lake Charles High School, served in the U.S. Navy, and then attended McNeese College before graduating from Tulane University. His career began as an independent rancher and then worked for Love's Mens Store, before beginning a career in the oil business. He was an oil lease broker and then became a partner and Vice President of Brownie Drilling Company. Later he became Manager of Goldsmith Farms LLC until his retirement.
Bob loved Lake Charles and served the community in many ways that include: Calcasieu Parish Police Jury and Calcasieu Parish Public Trust, Chairman of IMCAL, Chairman of C.C.O.A., Board of Calcasieu Parish Library, the Salvation Army Advisory Board, Board of Directors of the United Way, Member of the Chamber of Commerce of SW LA and The Calcasieu Rangers.
He was a member of Temple Sinai and served as President of the Congregation. Bob was the local chairman of the United Jewish Appeal and served on its Regional Board. He was on the board of directors for Lakeside National Bank and the advisory board of Jeff Davis Bank, was also a member of the Lake Charles Masonic Lodge and a 32nd degree Mason.
In addition to all of the Community involvement, Bob cherished his friends and family. He loved to tell stories with a twinkle in his eye and was always ready to entertain others with his cajun jokes and tall tales. He participated in a poker group that was always ready for his "joke of the week". His caregivers always loved his sense of humor. He was especially fond of Sylvia Sonnier whose love and devotion comforted him until his last breath. Ol' Bob loved his chocolate and his loyal dog Sonny, who was his best friend and always there for him. He treasured his time with Elizabeth, his family and friends on their wharf on River Road.
Bob was an avid skier and was easily identifiable by the bells he had on his poles. He enjoyed boating and hunting but he had an often conflicting passion for golf. He sometimes had trouble playing because most of his golf buddies "already had threesomes."
Donations in his memory may be made to the United Way, Salvation Army, or the .
