Robert N. Amaro, 71, of Fresno, CA, passed away on April 27, 2014. He was born in Fresno in 1942 to Joseph and Rita Amaro. Bob graduated from Central High School in 1961 and earned his B.A. and M.A. from California State University, Fresno. He was married to Virginia Abundis in 1975. Bob was the Attendance Director for Madera Unified School District (MUSD) for 24 years until he retired in June 2010. Robert N. Amaro, 71, of Fresno, CA, passed away on April 27, 2014. He was born in Fresno in 1942 to Joseph and Rita Amaro. Bob graduated from Central High School in 1961 and earned his B.A. and M.A. from California State University, Fresno. He was married to Virginia Abundis in 1975.

Bob was the Attendance Director for Madera Unified School District (MUSD) for 24 years until he retired in June 2010. His responsibilities included School Attendance, School Attendance Review Board, court for truant cases and Senate Bill 65. Prior to MUSD, Bob was an administrator for Selma Unified. He also worked for the Fresno County Department of Education and Fresno County Probation office. Bob was passionate about education and helping students.
Another passion for Bob was athletics. For over 40 years, he wore many hats in the athletic arena including player, coach and official. He was a member of the football, baseball and track teams at Central High School. He also played in various adult sports leagues and organized an adult fast pitch softball team in honor of his late brother, Michael Amaro.
Bob coached various youth athletic teams in the Central and Bullard High Districts. His love of mentoring and developing young people, combined with his passion for sports was evident when he was on the ball field. Bob hung up his whistle for the last time in the Fall of 2013 after coaching his grandson's flag football team.
Bob was an official for the CIF Central Section. He officiated various high school football, baseball, softball and basketball games throughout the Central Valley. Bob's willingness to serve others and his natural love for sports led him to become an official. The camaraderie that he built with his fellow officials was something that he loved as well.
Bob was very proud to be an alumnus of Central High School. After retirement, Bob helped organize numerous reunions and events for the class of 1961. Most recently Bob helped coordinate the 50th year class reunion. He cherished the memories with his fellow classmates. He also participated recently in the 50th year commemoration of the Central High 1964 Valley Baseball Championship team.
Bob was a devote Catholic and member of the Knights of Columbus. He joined the Fourth degree and was recognized by the Knights during a special ceremony in Monterey, CA in 2013. Bob was also a Veteran of the U.S. Army earning the rank Sergeant E-5 during his service from 1964-1967.
His presence was unmistakable and unforgettable as was his skill in public speaking and teaching. A natural storyteller, Bob captivated his audience with his passionate accounts of his history and shared many sports related stories. Bob will always be remembered for his love of life, his willingness to serve others and his love for his family and friends.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Virginia; his father, Joseph; his daughter, Gina and son-in-law Brian; his son, Robert; and his two grandsons, Cole and Aiden. Bob is also survived by his brothers, Joseph and David; sisters, Rosie, Marian, Sophie, and Eva; as well as many brothers and sisters in laws, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Whitehurst, Sullivan, Burns & Blair Funeral Home on Sunday, May 4, 2014 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. followed by Recitation of the Holy Rosary at 4:00 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church on Monday, May 5, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery in Fresno.
