Barito, Robert (Bob) William,
of Louisville, died peacefully on Sunday, June 6, 2010 at age 82.
Bob (a.k.a. Bibs) was born in Schenectady, NY to Wilfred and Elizabeth Barito on January 22, 1928. He attended high school at La Salle Military Institute and graduated from Siena College with a BS in Chemistry in 1949. Bob served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was married to his sweetheart Mary O'Leary in 1952. After his discharge from the military in 1952, he started work at General Electric in Schenectady. In 1959, he earned an MS in Chemistry from Union College. In 1964, Bob moved with his wife and children to Louisville, where he and Mary raised their 7 children, 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He retired from GE in 1988 after 35 years.
As a chemist, Bob is best known for his ground-breaking work in the area of vacuum insulation. In his personal life he will be remembered for his indefatigable commitment to his family and the positive energy he passed to anyone who knew him. Bob's humor and keen wit were a mainstay in his life. Bob was surrounded by his beloved family and friends at his passing.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Mary O. Barito; brother Raymond (Vicky); sons Paul (Carolan), Tom (Barb), Bob (Kellie), Joe (Margie) and Bill (Kate); and daughters Teresa (David) and Maggie (Paul).

To the Barito Family....
Bob Barito was my mentor. April 1, 1968 (April fool’s Day) Bob hired me to be his lab technician. At that time I was insecure, shy, naive, and of low self-esteem. Thanks to Bob I learned that I was of value and could do anything I set my mind to. I worked for Bob for about 15 years during which time I earned my degree from the University of Louisville with a major in chemistry. Bob saw to it that I was promoted to "exempt" status and we continued to work on many projects together.
Bob was also a man of vision. He saw well in advance the need for me to take another step in my career at GE. With Bob's encouragement I called GE Plastics directly and told them I wanted a field marketing position that I knew was open. GE Plastics appreciated my boldness and offered me the position
Joining GE Plastics....was. the second best move of my life,.... the first of course being joining the Plastics Lab working for Bob. I learned much from Bob both technically and personally.
Bob’s influence on me was life changing. I met 100’s of great people, had the opportunity to work for some of the greatest minds in the plastics industry and to got to know VP’s on a personal basis.
Bob's wit and humor was complimented by his compassion for others. He was a true blessing for all who knew him.. I do not think that in my entire working career anyone cared about me more than Bob Barito and the feeling is mutual.
In my heart Bob lives on…..

Dear Mary
My heart goes out to you in your loss of a wonderful guy and a man I highly respected in both his technical competency but also as a man and a straight shooter. I'm sure he will be missed so much, but I'm also sure that his disease gave him no quality of life this past year and in a way it is a blessing that the good Lord took him sooner than later. If there is any way I can be helpful, please give me a call as I have a lot more free time since Martha passed away in early January.
God be with you. Don Davis

It has been a pleasure getting to know Bob over the past year. He always had good stories to tell, I feel like I know the whole family! I will remember all the walks we had in the park, listening to music and enjoying the summer days on the back porch. He will be missed! I will keep the whole family in my thoughts and prayers during this time and beyond.

I'll always have great memories of Uncle Bob, in recent years but especially as a kid. I always loved listening to his stories and they always ended with that great laugh of his. I'll miss him very much.

We will all miss Uncle Bob so very much. Who could forget our great childhood adventures? He almost had me believing that I was on an outing with the other children from the orphanage! Uncle Bob always enjoyed a family reunion and he had an amazing sense of humor!! May he rest in peace.
