Robert Anthony Benedict, Jr. – Savannah, Ga.- Mr. Benedict, (Benny) as he was known all his life, passed away June 9, 2014 at Hospice House, Savannah, Ga. from kidney failure among other long term ailments. Benny was born in Hartford, Ct. March 19, 1936 to the late Rocco Robert di Benedetto and Dorothy Jean Edwards. He was also preceded in death by his younger brother Tony Benedict of Hartford, CT and his daughter, Gina Marie Benedict Norton of Memphis, TN. Robert Anthony Benedict, Jr. – Savannah, Ga.- Mr. Benedict, (Benny) as he was known all his life, passed away June 9, 2014 at Hospice House, Savannah, Ga. from kidney failure among other long term ailments. Benny was born in Hartford, Ct. March 19, 1936 to the late Rocco Robert di Benedetto and Dorothy Jean Edwards. He was also preceded in death by his younger brother Tony Benedict of Hartford, CT and his daughter, Gina Marie Benedict Norton of Memphis, TN.
From his first marriage he is survived by two sons and a daughter, Thomas and Robert Benedict and Cynthia Benedict Hicks, all of Hope Mills, N.C. From that union came several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
From his present marriage he is survived by his wife, Delores O'Neal Benedict of Savannah, GA. Also surviving are step children Bobby Blanton-Thailand, Tracy Blanton(Beth) – Columbus, Ga, Gene Blanton – Columbus, GA, Pam Johnson-Claxton, Ga, Debbie Blanton – Honolulu, HI, Amy Blanton – Atlanta, GA , Karen Blanton Gault (Shane) – Rincon, GA. Also surviving from this union, several step grandchildren and one step great grandchild.
Benny is survived by a sister, Lil Fortin and several nieces and nephews of Manchester, CT.
Benny is of the Catholic faith and was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, Savannah, GA
Benny was retired from the U.S. Army after serving 21 years with a tour of duty in Korea, and 2 tours of combat duty in Vietnam . His Army career started at Ft. Bragg, N.C. as a paratrooper with 300 jumps.
No funeral or service will be performed locally as arrangements are planned for a later date in Fayetteville, N.C.
I would like to thank the THA Home Health Group for the wonderful care they gave to Benny in our home before he was hospitalized. He received excellent care from a caring group of professionals.
Also I would like to thank Benny's private doctors, Dr. Wixon and Dr. Cohn for going above and beyond the call of duty to help him keep his dignity while trying to survive.
Also the staff at St. Joseph hospital for all the excellent care they gave during the short stay there. Also , Dr. Behyta, and Dr. Miller, for making Benny smile and keeping his morale up.
And to the Specialty Care Hospital within the Candler Hospital for your care and concern, to Dr. McNeely for your wonderful bedside manner. Many thanks for that.
And to Hospice House of Savannah for giving Benny the best care and his dignity for the last few hours of his life. Thank you for the kind care also that was given to me and my family before and after his passing.
