Passed away peacefully in Rocklin at
the age of 90 on January 4, 2014.
Bob was the younger of two children
born to Walter and Theresa Nachreiner
Benedict in Port Angeles, WA on
February 22, 1923. His formative
years were spent on the family's cattle
ranch in Redding where he developed
an enduring love for animals and the
outdoors. The family returned to
Washington state in 1938 and upon
graduation from Tenino High School,
Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served his country honorably from
1942 to 1945 as a machinist mate in the Pacific, African, European
and Middle Eastern Theaters during WWII.
Bob married the late Leahe Christian in 1944 and following his
discharge from the Navy, he and his new bride settled in Centralia,
WA, where they had two sons, Dennis and Steven L.
Throughout Bob's life his Navy training would prove invaluable. As
an accomplished engine mechanic, he began his career repairing
logging trucks for the Agnew Lumber Co. while also serving a short
stint as an officer on the Centralia police force.
In 1959 Bob and both boys relocated to Fair Oaks with his second
wife, Sylvia and her three children, Steven E. and Cindi whom he
adopted, and Cheri. While residing around the greater Sacramento
area, Bob was first employed by Livingston Concrete then worked
for A. Teichert & Son as a ready-mix driver and eventually as senior
engine mechanic until his retirement in 1986.
Bob was an avid outdoorsman and expert marksman. He enjoyed
hunting, camping and fishing, particularly when accompanied by one
or more of his sons. Exceptionally devoted to his pets, Bob adored
and cared for a number of dogs over his lifetime, all of which were
his loyal friends and constant companions. He was also a formidable
cribbage and horseshoe player, but his true passion lay in
mechanics. Whether a neighbor's automobile, a household appliance
or a child's bicycle, if it was broken, Bob could fix it. He would
often boast that he had ''never hired a repairman.''
Bob married his fourth wife, the late Patti Getchel in 1985, and for
the next twenty-four years they and Patti's daughter, Melissa, made
their home in southern Oregon; first in Brookings and later in White
City until Patti's death in 2009.
He was a proud member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge
#2093 in Medford, OR; the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks
Lodge #1934 in Brookings, OR; the American Legion Post #1000,
San Francisco; and E Clampus Vitus, Chapter #10, Nevada City.
Bob was preceded in death by his sister, Laura Yadeski. He is
survived by his loving children Dennis (Erma) Benedict of
Georgetown; Steven L. (Peggy) Benedict of Rocklin; Steven E.
(Kelli) Benedict of Loomis; Cindi (Vince) Berger of Las Vegas; Cheri
(Craig) Gandy of Roseville; Melissa (Jake) Jones of Corvallis. Also
survived by nine treasured grandchildren, Vonda (Jeff) Jaramillo of
Santa Fe; Dennis Benedict II (Karina) of Georgetown; Wendi
(Charles) Purcell of Wheatland; Brandon, Grant & Kyle Benedict of
Loomis; Robert & Justin Berger of Las Vegas; Taylor Figueroa of
Roseville and ten great-grandchildren.
Friends and family are invited to attend a visitation on Thursday,
January 9, from 5:00-7:00 pm at Chapel of the Hills, 1331 Lincoln
Way, Auburn. A celebration of Bob's life will be held at the Auburn
Elks Lodge, 195 Pine Street, on Friday, January 10, from noon to
2:00 pm. Private interment, Newcastle Cemetery.
