Dr. Robert T. E. Bishop, 88, peacefully passed away on April 18, 2017. His wife of 51 years, Carol, and three of his daughters were present. He was blessed to have lived a long and joyous life, caring for his family, friends, patients and colleagues for many years.
Dr. Bishop was born in Connecticut to Earle and Sarah Bishop. He was the youngest of three children and enjoyed a close, lifelong relationship with his two sisters, Jane Poole and Barbara Boley. He attended Trinity College in Hartford and received his medical degree from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. He moved to Texas in 1957, serving in the military for two years in San Antonio, then moving to Dallas where he was the medical director for New York Life Insurance. He opened his private medical practice in Dallas in 1960, and he enjoyed the opportunity to serve his patients and community for many years. After leaving private practice, he continued to provide medical and risk assessment advice to numerous insurance companies.
Dr. Bishop married the love of his life, Carol Preston, in 1966. He was the proud husband to Carol and leaves behind their three children, Judy Bishop, Cathy Marquis and her husband Alexander Marquis, and Nick Bishop and his wife, Jessica Bishop. He also leaves behind his children from a previous marriage, Anne Bishop and her husband Bob Bockheim, Robert Bishop, Margaret Emory, and James Bishop. He was the proud grandparent to six grandchildren - David and Christina Emery, Taylor, Alex and Sydney Marquis and Colson and Leighton Bishop - and one great grandchild, Brynn Ceder.
Bob (with one "o", as he would say) enjoyed a great life. His greatest joys were his family, his music, his garden and his friends. He loved to make people laugh. He traveled around the world, loved to listen to classical music, often played his clarinet, and sang in the choir at St. Michaels and All Angels Episcopal Church for over 40 years. Nothing made him happier than to sit on his patio, margarita in hand, while listening to his music, enjoying his garden and telling a corny joke.
His family will always remember the lessons he taught them: to laugh, to love and to enjoy the music (and always pee with the light on).
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 12:00 pm at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Dallas with a reception immediately following the ceremony. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (https://donate.lls.org/lls/donate) or the Alzheimer's Association (www.alztex.org/forms/donateform.asp).

Bob Bishop - we met you in 1973 at Inwood Racquet Club and a lifelong bond was forged. Peter coached you and Carol at tennis - but, more importantly, we forged a lifelong friendship - mostly through your magnanimous generosity and love of people. We were invited to accompany you and other friends to a villa in Cuernavaca, Mexico and we had the most amazing time and further bonded our friendship. I firmly believe that we became a part of your extended family and enjoyed so many of your celebrations - and also shared all of our wonderful achievements in Dallas.
Eventually we moved back to Australia after the birth of our son, Chris, in 1981, but that certainly didn't diminish the relationship we had with you and your fabulous family.
Over the years I have made several trips back to reconnect with you all and those times have been some of the happiest of my life.
Bob, you loved entertaining and was the best host -- lots of sitting quietly and catching up on the back patio, admiring your beautiful plumeria (known as frangipanni in Australia) and, of course, partaking of your exceptional margaritas. It was also in one of those patio encounters that you showed me the fabulous misting coolant system and I brought that back to Australia to share it with so many others.
You had the most extraordinary wit and sense of humour and was such a larrikin in exploiting all of our foibles -- I truly loved those interactions.
Bob - you have been one of the most significant people in my life and, while I am devastated that you have now transcended this earthly life, I will forever be thankful that I knew you and had so many opportunities to share special times with you and your amazing family.
I thank you so much for being a part of my family's life - but, more importantly, for what professionalism, Christian devotion, family devotion and just personal dignity and humanity you brought to all who have known you. I am certain that I am a better person for having known you.
Much love always
