Robert Orrin "Bob" Dowlen passed away on Thursday, the 18th of July 2013, in Houston, at the age of 83.

He was born on the 18th of August 1929, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Prince Orrin and Ruthe Brown Dowlen. The family moved to Houston in 1930, and Bob attended Montrose Elementary, Lanier Junior High School, and Lamar Senior High School. He graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1951 with a BA in Accounting. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi and Mensa International.

Bob married Andrea Simmons on the 10th of June 1952 in Houston, and in their earlier years they would load up the family station wagon and take their children on vacation road trips to Disneyland, Civil War battleground sites and many of Bobby and David's tennis tournaments throughout Texas and the United States. In later years, Bob and Andrea traveled extensively. One of his favorite destinations was Easter Island. More recently, Bob and his daughter Andrea enjoyed many trips to Las Vegas. He so loved traveling with his grandson, Kevin, to many major league baseball parks, and games. He attended almost every one of Kevin's lacrosse, football, little league baseball, and basketball games.

He was a Houston sports fanatic, supporting the Houston Astros, Houston Oilers and Texans through good times and bad. He was totally dedicated to his two sons' love of tennis that started for them at a very early age, continued through their college days at University of Houston, and today as professionals.

Bob enjoyed playing golf and tennis with his many friends at Houston Country Club. He was an avid movie goer and enjoyed Friday night at the movies and dinner with close friends.

Bob was preceded in death by his loving wife, Andrea, to whom he was married for 52 years. He is survived by his daughter, Andrea Ruth Dowlen; his sons, Robert Orrin Dowlen, Jr. and his wife Connie, and David Simmons Dowlen; his grandson, Kevin Simmons Dowlen; close family friend, Jean Dunn; and Connie's children, Catherine, Ashley, and Patrick Griffin.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at Garden Terrace and the Hampton Tanglewood for their compassionate care.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o'clock in the afternoon until seven o'clock in the evening on Monday, the 22nd of July, in the library and grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

A memorial service celebrating Mr. Dowlen's life is to be conducted at twelve o'clock noon on Tuesday, the 23rd of July, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, where Dr. Linda Christians, Executive Pastor of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, is to officiate. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the adjacent grand foyer.

Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery in Houston.

In lieu of customary remembrances, and for those desiring, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Mr. Dowlen's name be directed to St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 3471 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX, 77027.

"I will definately miss my dear friend Bob Dowlen (nick-name "Marvy"). I would ask Mr. Dowln how he was doing and he would always say "just marvy" so, I gave..."
