Robert William Giertz was born March 24, 1925 in Clifton, Illinois, the son of William Chris August and Emma Lena Louise (Meyer) Giertz. He was baptized April 19,1925, at Zion Lutheran Church, Chebanse, IL and confirmed his faith on April 10,1938. He was united in marriage to Vera Rosalie Herrmann at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Kankakee, Illinois, on November 30, 1946. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Davenport.

He was raised on the family farm in Chebanse, IL, and graduated from Chebanse High School. From 1945-1947 he served in the United States Army Air Force in San Antonio, TX. He received his BSME in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1950. He was a registered professional engineer in the state of Illinois.

Mr. Giertz began his 36-year career with Deere and Company in the Product Engineering Department of the John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works. In 1964 he completed the Senior Executive Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was named General Manager of the John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works in 1967, and later Director of Manufacturing for Deere and Company, Moline, IL.

Mr. Giertz retired from Deere and Company in 1986. Following retirement he was a management consultant for numerous small businesses and was the President of Giertz Enterprises.

In 2003 Mr. Giertz was inducted into the Cedar Valley Business Hall of Fame to honor his legacy in the Waterloo community. He was widely read, with particular interests in theology and business. He enjoyed computer programming, photography, writing, and especially family gatherings at his cabin on Burntside Lake in Ely, MN.
