ROBERT W. GILMORE, M.D. of St. Simons Island, Georgia died May 30, 2010, after a battle with cancer. Dr. Gilmore was born on May 25, 1920 in Michigan City, Indiana. He was the youngest of two sons of Dr. Russell A. Gilmore and Lillian Gilmore. His older brother, Russell A. Gilmore, Jr. , passed away two years ago. ROBERT W. GILMORE, M.D. of St. Simons Island, Georgia died May 30, 2010, after a battle with cancer. Dr. Gilmore was born on May 25, 1920 in Michigan City, Indiana. He was the youngest of two sons of Dr. Russell A. Gilmore and Lillian Gilmore. His older brother, Russell A. Gilmore, Jr. , passed away two years ago.

Dr. Gilmore was a graduate of Amherst College, Amherst, Mass. (Class of 43). He graduated from Temple University Medical School in Philadelphia, Pa., and completed his internship at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Ill. Dr. Gilmore served as a physician in the United States Navy at Bethesda Naval Hospital and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After his military service he completed his residency in Pediatrics at Cook County Hospital and Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. He then practiced medicine in Michigan City, Indiana as a Board Certified Pediatrician from 1949 until his retirement in 1995. During his practice he served as Chief of Staff at St. Anthony Hospital in Michigan City, Indiana and also was a staff Pediatrician at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois.

Dr. Gilmore married the former Helen Louise Clift of Bay City, Michigan in 1944, who survives. Dr. and Mrs., Gilmore have three children who survive: son, Judge Robert W. Gilmore, Jr. (Ret.) and his wife Barbara, who reside in Waverly, Ga., son Dr. Peter C. Gilmore and his wife Elizabeth who reside in Yakima , Washington and daughter, Gina Reed (Gilmore) and husband Tony who reside in Jupiter, Florida. Dr. and Mrs. Gilmore have four grandchildren; Lori Miltenberger, Valparaiso, Indiana, Geoffrey Gilmore, Birmingham, Michigan, Tracy Gilmore, Chicago, Illinois and Tony Gilmore, Portland Oregon. They also have 5 great grandchildren; Emily, Madeline and William Miltenberger and Mia and Geoffrey Gilmore.

Dr. Gilmore cared for thousands of children in the Michigan City, Indiana area during his practice and was known by children and their parents as "Dr. Bob". In 1998 Dr. Gilmore received the Sagamore of the Wabash award from Indiana Governor Frank O'Bannon. The Sagamore of the Wabash is the highest honor the Governor of Indiana can bestow upon a citizen of Indiana.

In 2005 Dr. and Mrs. Gilmore moved to their favorite place, St. Simons Island, Georgia, to do their favorite thing, play golf. Dr. Gilmore loved family, loved friends, loved golf and loved life.

There will be a Memorial Service at the Chapel in Edo Miller Funeral Home on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. A gathering for friends and family will be held at Sea Palms Country Club after the Memorial Service from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
