Robert George Greene, former president of the New Jersey Orthopaedic Society and former president of Associated Physicians of Montclair and Vicinity, died of heart failure at home in Montclair, N.J., on Friday, Nov. 2. He was 87. Memorial services for Dr. Greene will be held in the Bayberry room at Mountainside Hospital, Montclair, on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m. Dr. Greene will be inurned at Arlington National Cemetery. Robert George Greene, former president of the New Jersey Orthopaedic Society and former president of Associated Physicians of Montclair and Vicinity, died of heart failure at home in Montclair, N.J., on Friday, Nov. 2. He was 87. Memorial services for Dr. Greene will be held in the Bayberry room at Mountainside Hospital, Montclair, on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m. Dr. Greene will be inurned at Arlington National Cemetery. Born in New York City and raised in Newark, N.J., Dr. Greene had a private practice in Montclair for 42 years, before retiring in 1997. He also served as president of the medical staff at Mountainside Hospital and as director of its department of orthopedics. In 1997, Dr. Greene received the Lifetime Service Award from the New Jersey Orthopaedic Society for contributions to orthopedic surgery, medicine and the community. Dr. Greene earned a bachelor's degree from Franklin & Marshall College in 1943, graduating with cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa honors after two years at the school. He earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania College of Medicine in 1947. Following his training, Dr. Greene held internships at Lenox Hill Hospital and Roosevelt Hospital in New York. He then held residencies at Lenox Hill and at Children's Medical Center in Boston. Dr. Greene served two stints in the U.S. Navy. His first came during World War II, when he was stationed in the United States from 1943 to 1945. Five years later, he served another two years, when he was assigned to a Marine casual company as a battle surgeon in Korea. He was honorably discharged as a lieutenant in 1952. Upon his return to the United States, Dr. Greene held an orthopedic surgery residency rotation in Boston, working at Massachusetts General Hospital, Children's Medical Center and Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. He was also a teaching fellow at Harvard University at the time. Dr. Greene was a longtime faculty member at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Judith Alper Greene. He is also survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Greene of Seattle; a son, Adam Greene of Madison, Wis.; a son, Jay Greene and his wife, Rochelle Howe, and their two sons, Will and Sam, also of Seattle. He is also survived by his brother, Alan D. Greene of Kinnelon, N.J. He was a son of Edward and Rose Greene of Newark, N.J. Memorial gifts can be made in his honor to the Judith A. and Robert G.
