Robert Munroe (Bob) Hewitt, age 90, passed away on Tuesday morning November 5th at his home. Bob was born November 23, 1922, in Springfield, Illinois, to Ancil Clyde Hewitt and Grace Eloise Middaugh Hewitt. He married Margaret Nelson Hewitt in 1953. He was preceded in death by sisters Evalyn Roberts and husband Ted Roberts, and Grace Brown and husband Jerry Brown. Bob was a veteran of World War II where he served in the US Marine Corps from 1942 to 1946. Robert Munroe (Bob) Hewitt, age 90, passed away on Tuesday morning November 5th at his home.
Bob was born November 23, 1922, in Springfield, Illinois, to Ancil Clyde Hewitt and Grace Eloise Middaugh Hewitt. He married Margaret Nelson Hewitt in 1953. He was preceded in death by sisters Evalyn Roberts and husband Ted Roberts, and Grace Brown and husband Jerry Brown.
Bob was a veteran of World War II where he served in the US Marine Corps from 1942 to 1946. When he returned from the war he attended the University of Illinois in Urbana, Illinois, where he received a BS degree in Journalism following which he began a career in radio. In 1962 he brought his family to Jackson, TN where he was News Director with WDXI Radio and TV. In 1975 he joined the Jackson Sun as City Editor and later was employed by the City of Jackson as Personnel/Public Relations Director. He was an Elder and Sunday School teacher in the First Presbyterian Church and member and Past Commander of VFW Post 1848.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret Hewitt; daughter Kim Hewitt and husband Mike Forman; son Mike Hewitt and wife Donna; daughter Karen Wimpee and husband Hollis; granddaughters Amy Henderson Hall (Chip), Lisa Henderson Veteto (Jimmy) and Renee Wimpee; grandsons Patrick Hewitt and Daniel Hewitt; great grandchildren Ava Hall, Cy Hall, Gavin Veteto and Avery Veteto; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Friday, November 8, 2013, at George A. Smith and Sons Funeral Home from 5 PM to 7 PM. A memorial service with reception following will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2013, at 11 AM at First Presbyterian Church, 1573 North Highland, Jackson, TN, with Revs. John White and Robert Henry officiating. A private burial service for family will be in Ridgecrest Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, Jackson, TN; Salvation Army, Jackson, TN; or .
