Bob was born in Albany, New York, and passed away peacefully on February 6th, 2014. He was preceded in death by his mother, Bella, and his father, Charles, his brother, Charles, and Rose, his wife of 51 years. Bob and Rose have two daughters, Christina Marie Chester, and Regina Rose Cake. They were blessed with three grandchildren; William Walsh, Scott Walsh, and Kathy Hughes, and four wonderful great grandchildren.
Four years after Rose's passing, Bob met Bernetta Hankey, and after a short courtship they were married at Regina's home in Madera Ranchos, Ca.
Bob always said that he was "The Old Dog" and Bernetta was his "young pup". He considered his marriages to Rose and "Bernie" a double blessing from God.
Bob attended Christian Brothers Military Academy in Albany, New York, prior to his enlistment in the U.S. Navy during World War Two, and landed with the 1st Marine Division on Iwo Jima on February 19th, 1945. Because of his perilous landing, he was awarded the Asian / Pacific ribbon with one combat star, the Navy Combat Ribbon, and the Sea-Bee Combat Badge, and was also entitled to the 5th Fleet Marine Ribbon, Navy Commendation Ribbon, Japan Occupation / WWII Victory Ribbon, and the American Defense, American Campaign, and the Navy Reserve ribbons. He was also a life member of the Iwo Jima Survivors Association.
After the war, Bob returned home, where he met, courted, and married Rose Hart. After about three years living in Albany, Bob moved his wife and daughters to Billings, Montana, where they remained for the next twelve years, as Bob drove truck for a living.
Over the years, they relocated again to San Diego, Redding, Stockton, Chico, and finally to Merced, as Bob worked his way up the corporate ladder before retiring at the age of 65.
Bob was a past commander of American Legion Post 83 in Merced, and for 25 years has served as Chaplain for both the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His career as Chaplain touched thousands of lives, and his compassion and respect while presiding over military funerals was legendary, earning him the American Legion's first Chaplain of the Year title. Health issues forced Bob to retire as chaplain of Post 83 in 2013, and he was called to serve at The Lord's side on February 6th, 2014. A Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 09, 2014 from 5:00pm-6:00pm at Our Lady of Mercy.
Rosary will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 435 W. 21th St., Merced, CA on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at 6:00pm with Funeral Mass to follow on Monday, February 10, 2014 at 10:00am. Interment will follow services at Merced District Cemetery.
Arrangements under the direction of Stratford Evans Merced Funeral Home, Merced, CA.

"Dad was a loving, honorable man. He was a tough old dog, but loved with all his heart. He would give all he had to any vet. He buried many soldiers over..." Regina Cake (Madera, CA)
