Robert Mays Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 10, 2014.

Robert Steven Mays, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, left this earthly life far too soon on Saturday, February 1, 2014. He leaves behind many who dearly love him and mourn his untimely passing. He was born July 16, 1960 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Darlene Marie Ford Mays and Daniel Straup Mays. Rob married the love of his life, Laurie Michele Bridges, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple March 12, 1981. They were blessed with three beautiful daughters, Erika Lynn Cardon (Kirk Marcus), Jessica Marie Wilcox (Andrew James), and Monica Michele Williams (Jonathan Frank). He would lovingly call them his "ica girls."
Rob's career took his family from Salt Lake City, Utah to Windermere, Florida; Mesa, Arizona; back to Salt Lake City, Utah and then to Benton, Louisiana. He was determined to learn from every new opportunity, as well as let his life be an example of what his beliefs were. He had no hesitation in sharing his beliefs about God and the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Rob served in many positions in the LDS Church. He worked with the Scouts and youth, as well as numerous leadership positions. His final assignment was the Ward Employment Specialist. He was deeply vested in helping others find a way out of unemployment and he found great joy and purpose in doing so.
Rob was full of life and love. He loved the mountains, camping, Southern Utah, the outdoors, and traveling, especially cruises in the Caribbean. He loved airplanes and flying. One of his greatest joys in his last years was playing with his grandchildren.
Rob was preceded in death by his mother, Darlene Marie Ford Mays, his father, Daniel Straup Mays, and his father-in-law Marcell Eugene Bridges. He is survived by his wife of 33 years Laurie Michele Bridges Mays; his three daughters and their husbands; his 7 grandchildren; his brother Kenneth Mays (Marie); sister Merlyn Mays Greenwood (Lee); 6 sisters-in-law and 5 brothers-in-law, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
He will forever be remembered for his wit and humor and was always ready to engage in a lively discussion. He would often joke with Laurie and say, "Don't ever let it be said I didn't do the least I could do." Even though our hearts are broken, we are strengthened by our Heavenly Father with the knowledge that through temple covenants we will be together again. ILYMA! 5+
Funeral services will be Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 12pm at the Cottonwood Heights Stake Center (6890 E. Whitmore Way). There will be a viewing Friday, February 14, 2014 from 5-7pm at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary (3401 S. Highland Dr.) as well as one hour prior to services Saturday at the church. I was stunned to read of Rob's passing on Linkedin. I worked with Rob for his entire career at Boise Cascade. He always stood out for his intellect, integrity, work ethic, and sense of humor. He truly was a "glass half full" person and a pleasure to work with. I know I am a better person for having known Rob. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

My heart is broken, I just learned the news through my normal method of staying in-touch with Rob through LinkedIN. Rob hired me at Boise Cascade in Orlando in 1997, until he relocated. He has been the best boss and I called him a long distance friend. I am a better person by knowing him, I will miss him. My sincere condolences to Laurie and the entire family. Laurie,
My profound condolences to you and family. I worked with Rob for many years at Boise and OfficeMax in Phoenix and enjoyed having him as a boss and colleague. Depending on context, he used to call me either "Commander Data" (after the Star Trek character), as I crunched numbers for him, or "Captain Quality," during my tenure as head of the Quality Council.
Two characteristics stand out in my memory about Rob: his grace under pressure (always calm and unflappable) and his integrity. He was always clear about his values and expectations, but recognized and respected different opinions and beliefs.
When I see planes from nearby Deer Valley Airport overhead, I recall his enthusiasm for flying and flight simulation software. In the future, those planes will frequently remind me of Rob and his smile.
I know his loss will leave a void in many lives. I am happy for having known him.

Dear Laurie, Erika, Jessica and Monica. Craig and I were very saddened to hear of Rob's passing. We remember so many good times with your children and ours. Rob was an amazing youth/scout leader. He influenced for the good so many young boys, including ours. We also remember visiting you in Florida after you moved there. All in all, we have history with you dear folks and our hearts go out to you with your great loss. Rob died too young, for sure. May you be comforted by knowing that you will be with him again for eternity. What a great blessing to know that. Love, Renon and Craig Hulet

Dear Laurie
Jill and I were deeply saddened to hear of Robs passing. We are out of town and sincerely regret missing the funeral but hope to see you soon. Rob played a big role in Brandon's youth and my time as a Scout leader and in making us feel welcome in the ward. I remember fondly our "Manly Trips" with Scott and Von to the Grand Canyon, Dollhouse, Green River, Alaska. Rob was a source of humor, good conversation, leadership and the most postive life philosphy of anyone I knew. We are grateful to have known him and will miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your daughters.

Love Craig and Jill McDonald

Rob was one of my first leaders when I moved to the Cottonwood Heights area. He gave so much of his time and energy in order to take all of us to the most amazing places Utah has to offer, many of which I now take my family to. We definitely did not let him know how much we appreciated everything he did, and everything he put up with at the time, but I would just like to say how much I appreciate it even to this day, as I am sure everyone else does.

Rob "Bor" Mays Bor=Rob backwards "his nickname among the youth group"
I grew up in the same cottonwood heights ward that the Mays family attended. I had the Extreme Blessing of having Rob as a part of my life. He was my Scout Leader and Young Men's leader for several years. He was just always there along with my Scout Master Scott Wilde. I have many fond memories of going camping and hiking every month to some of the most beautiful places in Utah. Rob was one of the most even keel, and Joyful people that I have ever met. The scout and young men's group was a special one. We were all friends and hung out together at school and in our free time, and still remain friends today. I send my deepest condolences to Rob's family and friends. Rob means a lot to me. It is great to tell stories to my wife and children about all of the fun and special times that I had, which helped to mold who I am today. Rob is one of the elect.

Laurie and Family,
I was so surprised and saddened to hear about Rob's passing. As a fellow General Manager at Boise Cascade, I knew Rob and always admired his intellect, courage, honesty, humor, and absolute integrity. The world is a poorer place without his light in it.

Dear Laurie and Family,
Ron and I were very saddened (as well as very shocked) to hear of Brother Mays passing. We enjoyed the visits of our home teachers in Brighton 8th Ward, and he always shared a special thought or experience regarding the gospel that was so meaningful and comforting. He had a special spirit that could be felt when being around him. We appreciated Rob's and Brother Caldwell's visits and the prayers and thoughts we benefited from during their visits. May all of your family be blessed with peace and comfort at this difficult time. May the memories help lighten the sad moments that come along. You have been in our thoughts and prayers.
Love, Ron and Carolyn Johnson

Rob was more than just the best boss I ever had, he was one of my guiding lights as a youth in our ward in Cottonwood Heights. He would play hoops with us a lot and then take just a minute to tell a joke and pre and post-mission plans and took a chance by hiring me at Boise Cascade where I worked hard and he rewarded me along the way. Everyday when I would come in the office he would walk over to me, bow down to show me his bald head and ask "do you need a mirror to straighten your tie sir!" We had many seasons of going down to Moab to 4-wheel with his Explorer and even got in some hair-raising (pun intended) situations when the axle broke up high on a ledge with the tires already about an inch off the side. He was cool and level headed and got us out of the jam and we laughed! He always stayed in touch and I feel honored to call Rob my mentor, eternal friend and brother in the gospel. More than anything Rob made it clear in every conversation to express his love for his wife and kids. He adored you and honored you with every opportunity. Until we meet again Rrrrrrrrrrrobert-o!

Words cannot express the shock and dismay when I heard about Rob's passing. I worked with Rob over a 20 year span and was so blessed to have known him. Since we both ran the Orlando market, we always chatted about the area and the people who worked here. I loved having that connection with Rob. He was such a terrific person; he was thoughtful, intelligent and just so wonderful to be around. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.

Rob mentored me and gave me guidance in business and life that I use every day. I will never forget him and will miss him dearly. Rob cared like no one else I know. He loved his family so dearly, spoke of them with love often, and was a proud husband, dad, grandfather and son. His legacy will stay alive in all he knew. With deepest sympathy to Rob's family.
