Robert McBride Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 16, 2014.

Robert Ellis McBride, Jr., passed away at his home at 625 Columbus Drive, Savannah on Wednesday, May 14th. He was 91 years of age.
Mr. McBride was born in 1922, the son of Robert E. and Theresa Turner McBride.
He spent his life as a printer, beginning as a "printer's devil" with a local company before joining the Savannah Morning News and Evening Press in 1946. He retired in 1991 after 45 years' service as head of the printing department, having worked his way to the top position.
Bobby, as he was known, was a Roman Catholic and regularly attended Catholic functions until his recent illness. He served in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the Catoctin, and witnessed the Japanese surrender to the Allied Nations. He was Past Commander of American Legion Post 183, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Angela Quinan McBride, to whom he was married for 52 years, a son, Robert E, McBride III, a daughter, Barbara, and a sister, Lotta Runnion. He is survived by a son, Daniel A. McBride of Thomaston, GA, a daughter, Theresa McBride Trail of Macon, a daughter, Marie McBride Powers of Savannah, a loving friend, Tracie Handley of Lexington, KY, and "his other son Danny," Daniel M. Stevens of Thomaston, GA.
His dry wit, the decades-long friendships that he cherished, his unequaled story-telling ability including how he could make even life aboard a ship in WW II hilarious, his beautiful manners, chivalry, and natty dressing that made even the most mundane event feel special, and his love of dancing "the old fashioned way" all contributed to the essence that was Bobby McBride. He will be dearly missed by many who were fortunate enough to have called him a friend.
Visitation will be Sunday, May 18th, from 7pm to 9pm at Fairhaven Funeral Home at 7415 Hodgson Memorial Drive, Savannah. The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, May 19th, 2014 at 10am at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Savannah, with burial in the Catholic Cemetery.
