Robert E. Smith 86, passed away April 2nd. "Bob" as he liked to be called, served in U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a proud member of the Syracuse Police Department. During his 20 year tenure, he served as President of the Syracuse Benevolent Association for 9 Years. He was successful in obtaining health insurance and 20 year retirement for his fellow officers which they still enjoy to this day. Upon retiring, he operated Karl's Tavern at Moyers Corners for 6 years before leaving for the warmth of Florida for 28 years. The love of family brought him back to the Syracuse area 6 years ago. Bob was a true sportsman all his life, playing football and baseball in his early adulthood in the Syracuse area. He was an avid bowler throughout his life. He was elected to the PBA Hall of Fame while in Florida. He was predeceased by his three sisters Margaret Swanson, Arlene Collins and Shirley Schmunk, and his younger brother Richard Smith. His older brother, John "Moe" Smith of Lake Helen, FL. is the last surviving sibling.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, the former Betty Thompson; his son, Daniel (Jackie) Smith of Morrisville, NY; daughter, Patricia Smith of Maitland, FL; and 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
A memorial gathering for the family will follow at a later date.

This great man was known to our neighborhood as Mr. Smith. He was one of our little league coaches in the late 1960's. He helped when ever help was needed on Orangeport Road in Brewerton. To Dan and Patty and family you are all in our prayers. Rick Martell and our entire family.
