Robert Stebbins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 9, 2011.

Gorham – Robert "Stebby" J, Stebbins, age 81, of Portland, passed away peacefully Monday, March 7, 2011 in his home after battling cancer.
Robert was born on July 3, 1929 in Sanford, ME. where he lived until he became a chef in the Merchant Marines. On June 4, 1949 Robert married Georgianna and with her help and patience became a loving father to four daughters and one son.
After his time in the service, Robert was employed at Bath Iron Works for thirty years. In addition, he found pleasure in helping family and friends with home improvements. In his spare time he enjoyed playing cards, camping with his children and grandchildren, vacationing in Aruba, and cooking elaborate meals for family get-togethers. Robert shared his passion for these activities with his wife and family.
Besides his parents, Henry Stebbins & Margaret Casey, Robert is predeceased by four brothers and three sisters: Roland Stebbins, Raymond Stebbins, Francis Stebbins, Larry Stebbins, Lorraine Nason, Evelyn Small, and Beatrice Therrien.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years Georgianna Stebbins; a daughter Barbara Vassallo and her husband Richard; a daughter Kathy LeClerc and her husband Norman; a son David Stebbins; a daughter Joanne Higgins and her husband Cooper; and a daughter Patricia Woodhouse and her husband David. Also surviving him is his close brother-in-law Charles Staples and his wife Betty Lou; sisters Elmer Kinder and Irene Seybolt; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
A remembrance visitation will be held with family and friends on Friday, March 11 from 4-7 p.m. at Jones Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, located on 199 Woodford Street in Portland. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 12 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery in South Portland.
The family would like to thank the staff at Southern Maine Hospice and Maine Medical Center for their dedication and kindness throughout this difficult time.

Georgianna, and the Stebbins family, please accept our sincere condolences. He was a man we spent way too little time with, but the times we did have with him we will cherish forever. We are most thankful, feel privileged, to have had the opportunity to share a small part of our lives with him; he truly was one of a kind, and he leaves a void that will never be filled.

Love to you, Georgie, and the whole Stebbins crew. The club just won't be the same at Sebago without "Stebby." I'll miss the wonderful meals he made, but mostly his comical self. He always made me smile!!! Big hugs!!!
