Obituary

Long time Conejo Valley resident Robert Wiles passed away peacefully at home after a brief illness. Robert was born in eastern Washington state on May 2, 1934, the only child of James and Olive Wiles. Robert received his BA degree in music and choral conducting from Seattle Pacific University in 1956. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956-1960 before moving to Oxnard, CA in 1960. His first teaching job was at Oxnard High School. When Thousand Oaks High School opened in 1964, he moved to Thousand Oaks and became the first choral director at the new high school. Long time Conejo Valley resident Robert Wiles passed away peacefully at home after a brief illness. Robert was born in eastern Washington state on May 2, 1934, the only child of James and Olive Wiles.


Robert received his BA degree in music and choral conducting from Seattle Pacific University in 1956. He served in the U.S. Army from 1956-1960 before moving to Oxnard, CA in 1960. His first teaching job was at Oxnard High School. When Thousand Oaks High School opened in 1964, he moved to Thousand Oaks and became the first choral director at the new high school. He taught music and english to three decades of TOHS students before retiring as Department Chair in 1994. He took one sabbatical in 1977-78 to earn his Masters Degree in Ethnomusicology from University of San Diego. In addition to school choirs, Robert was also the Church Choir Director at First United Methodist Church of Ventura, then United Methodist Church of Thousand Oaks, as well as several community choirs.


Bob will be most remembered for his generosity and his unwavering faith in Jesus Christ.


A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 9, 12:00pm at St Matthew's United Methodist Church, 1360 S Wendy Dr, Newbury Park, CA 91320. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Seattle Pacific University (spu.edu; 866-778-2638) and St Matthew's United Methodist Church (newburyparkchurch.com; 805-498-6910)
