Rocco M. Longo, 93, of Solvay, passed away Saturday April 6, 2013 at Upstate University Hospital at Community General. Rocky was born in Syracuse to the late Orazio and Nicolina (Zingaro) Longo. He was a graduate of Solvay High School and attended CCBI. He was a US Army Veteran of World War II. Rocky retired from Crucible Specialty Metals after 43 years of service. He was a lifelong communicant of St. Cecilia Church, a member of its Holy Name Society and served as an usher for many years. He was a member of the CNY Board of Basketball Officials, Solvay Tigers AC, the Geddes Veterans's, Solvay Mountaintop Fire Department, and was inducted...
Rocco M. Longo, 93, of Solvay, passed away Saturday April 6, 2013 at Upstate University Hospital at Community General. Rocky was born in Syracuse to the late Orazio and Nicolina (Zingaro) Longo. He was a graduate of Solvay High School and attended CCBI. He was a US Army Veteran of World War II. Rocky retired from Crucible Specialty Metals after 43 years of service. He was a lifelong communicant of St. Cecilia Church, a member of its Holy Name Society and served as an usher for many years. He was a member of the CNY Board of Basketball Officials, Solvay Tigers AC, the Geddes Veterans's, Solvay Mountaintop Fire Department, and was inducted into the Greater Syracuse Bowling Hall of Fame after having served many years as secretary of the Greater Syracuse Bowling League. Rocky was an avid golfer and bowler, and was a dedicated NY Yankee fan.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, the former Josephine Fernandez, 5 children; Patricia (John) Gibbons, Nancy (David) Duff, MaryEllen (Dan) VanCott, Thomas (Bonnie) Longo and Christine (Andrew) Sajna, 8 grandchildren; Nicole Coletta, Alison (Jay) Morgan, Daryl (Kellie) Moore, Christopher Gibbons, Matthew Gibbons, Andrea Longo, Michael (Jennifer) VanCott and Beth (Joe) Szlosek, as well as 9 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:15 am Wednesday in BAGOZZI TWINS FUNERAL HOME and 9 am at St. Cecilia Church, where a Funeral Mass will be celebrated. The Rite of Committal will follow with Military Honors in Assumption Cemetery, Syracuse. Calling hours are from 4 to 7 pm Tuesday at BAGOZZI TWINS FUNERAL HOME, 2601 Milton Avenue.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to St. Cecilia Church, 1001 Woods Rd., Solvay, NY 13209, the Solvay-Geddes Community Youth Center, 1010 Woods Rd, Solvay, NY 13209 or Solvay Fire Dept., 1925 Milton Ave, Solvay, NY 13209.
