Roger Peter Herr returned to the Lord in the evening of December 27, 2016. The story of his life, curtailed much too soon, is one of true love and realized dreams. Strong-willed and gentle-spirited, Roger was a devoted husband, a generous father, and a doting, tender-hearted grandfather.
Roger was born May 27, 1949 in Alexandria, Va. Twelve years later, his family moved to Florida where many of his relatives still live today. At 18, he joined the US Air Force to serve during the Vietnam War.
His tour of duty landed Roger all over the country. But it was while stationed in San Antonio, that he met the love of his life Maria Teresa Herr at age 19. Married for 47 years, they built their dream home and filled it with love, laughter, and the joyful ruckus of grandchildren. Together, Roger and Tessa's light beamed beyond the oasis they created for their family as they served as pillars of and advocates for their community.
Roger loved technology, dogs, and horses, alike. As a younger man, he was a prized showman. He also began studying computers-particularly mainframes large enough to fill a room-and then worked for Datapoint before launching his own business WhyNot?Consulting. As an entrepreneur and pioneer of the computer industry, he traveled the globe teaching tech-hounds, alike, the ins and outs of network security and architecture, virtualization, and more. In his spare time, he also enjoyed life as a master gardener, avid traveler, and political consultant.
Roger distinctly impacted the lives of many. To those who knew him, he was a wise, humorous, and magnanimous man. His legacy will undoubtedly continue as Roger is survived by his wife, three children Roger Jr., Eric, and Jacqueline, eight grandchildren Maddie, Tessa, Paloma, Odette, Noah, Emilia, Santiago, and Alex, as well as numerous loved ones throughout the world.
Please make any charitable donations on Roger's behalf to the Humane Society or the Breast Cancer Survivor Fund.
The Rosary (Jan. 2 at 7pm) and Memorial Mass (Jan. 3 at 10am) will both be held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in San Antonio at 8500 Cross Mountain Trail.

I worked with Roger from time to time at Datapoint when our functions crossed, but more often had the good fortune to hang out with him and the other marketing folks at happy hour. I will always remember Roger as the consummate professional, and a terrific guy.
