Ron was my supervisor at TMU. I remember Saturday morning training drills, in all weather, with Ron making sure that every member knew his role and executed it flawlessly. His motives were simple - to deliver the police service, and to make sure each one of us was skilled enough to protect ourselves. I was inspired by his passion for his troops and have taken that lesson forward. A mark of a man is the lessons one learns from him. I learned a lot from Ron about law enforcement and about living life. He was a good boss and a good man.

My time spent with Ron as my boss can be described as one of the highlights of a career as a DPD officer. It was to be a temporary assignment that lasted five years until his retirement, starting at the 1st pct., to Central Events and ending at Tactical Operations.
I watched, he taught and everyday was a learning experience from one of the most respected Command Officers of the department. His knowledge, compassion and friendship will never be forgotten.
When my son was two, I took Jeff to the office. Ron was there and my son said "Hi grandpa Shiner". Ron smiled and said "I'm too young to be a grandpa, but it sure sounds nice. I know he felt that way every time one of his little ones addressed him.
Boss, thanks for being you.

He was my boss at Central Events and a wonderful man. Treat female officers with dignity and respect. Fair to all. A true cops cop. Mrs. Shiner you can be proud of your husband, he was way ahead of his time. I hope your grandkids know what a wonderful person he was and just how many people LOVE and RESPECTED HIM. Absolutely one of the most beloved officers on the Detroit Police Department. Charlene Genther 1975-1989 DPD.

I worked with Ron at the First Precinct and Central Division. We shared many tense moments, along with moments of humor, during large scale events such as the 1980 GOP Convention. I have nothing but the highest respect for Ron, and I am grateful for the friendship we shared.

Having spent close to my entire career at the Tactical Mobile Unit, I saw many a boss come and go. Ron was one of the best bosses I ever worked for. The only peoblem was that his assignment there was not long enough. His true concern for his troops, both on and off the job, is a trait that is not found very often. He will be missed in more ways then I can express here. God Bless.

The Best Boss, any street cop could ever want, even after leaving DPD, he took care of guys and always had a smile and good word. He will be dearly missed to me as a friend & confidant first then a superior supervisor who never hesitated leading the way.
October 22, 2013
My first memory of Ron Shiner was of a larger than life patrol sergeant at the Tactical Mobile Unit in 1968 when I served there as a young officer. I later had the pleasure of working for him at the Fifth Precinct and again when he commanded the Tactical Operations Section after the 1980 GOP Convention. If I said that Ron was admired and respected by those who worked for him and with him, that would be an understatement. He was a charismatic leader who always chose to lead from the front. He will be missed but never forgotten by those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
