RONALD R. SWEGER, SR, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, age 79, of Harrisburg, PA, passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2012, in Penn State Hershey Medical Center. He was born July 9, 1933, in Millerstown, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents Mildred and Benjamin Sweger and his brothers, Robert and William Sweger. He is survived by his wife, Shirley J. RONALD R. SWEGER, SR, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, age 79, of Harrisburg, PA, passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2012, in Penn State Hershey Medical Center.
He was born July 9, 1933, in Millerstown, PA.
He was preceded in death by his parents Mildred and Benjamin Sweger and his brothers, Robert and William Sweger.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley J. Sweger, his children, Benjamin, of Harrisburg, PA, Ronald, Jr., of Enola, PA, Debra Roller, and husband, David, of Steelton, PA, Dianna Shutt, and husband Gary, of Enola, PA, Mary Yeager, and husband, Scott, of Carlisle, PA, and David Sweger, of Enola, PA. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, as well as his sister, Dolores Hower and her husband William, of Mechanicsburg, PA, sisters-in-law, Mary Sweger, of Lititz, PA, and Shirley Sweger, of Duncannon, PA, as well as a lot of nieces and nephews who will all miss him dearly.
He was 14 years old when he enlisted in the National Guards and then enlisted in the Air Force. He was a Korean War Veteran from 1951 – 1955, where he received the Korean Service Medal, UN Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. He was stationed in Korea and served as a munitions specialist in the 804th Supply Sq. He retired from Amp, Inc., February 1, 1996, as a supervisor of Electronic Designer Automation Engineering. He was employed there for 32 years. He was a fun-loving, family man who always took pride and cherished the time he had with his family.
He was a former member of Christ United Methodist Church, Rutherford, in which he held several offices. He was a member of the Twenty-Ninth Street United Methodist Church, past president of the Rutherford Lions Club several times, and Zone Chairman of District 14T and awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow Award, and an instructor for the Pennsylvania Game Commission Hunter-Trapper Education program for 35 years. He was a member of the Amp Nimrods, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Loyal Order of the Moose in Millerstown, PA, American Legion in Linglestown, PA, and a proud supporter of the NRA, an AARP member, a member of Thousand Trails, where he loved to go camping with his wife and travel in their motor home. He was an avid hunter who taught his sons and a few grandsons to hunt. He was also a Wednesday night Pinnacle player and a fan of the Steelers, Penn State, Phillies, and Hershey Bears.
A viewing will be held Friday, November 2, 2012, 6:00 – 8:00 pm, and Saturday, November 3, 2012, 9:00 – 10:00 am, in Neill Funeral Home, 3501 Derry Street, Harrisburg, PA 17111, followed by a service at 10:00 am. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the , 1019 Mumma Road, Wormleysburg, PA 17043, or to the Kidney Foundation of Central PA, 4813 Jonestown Road, Suite 101, Harrisburg, PA 17109.
