Rose O' Brien Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 9, 2017.

Rose Steil O'Brien, 93, passed away on March 8, 2017. Rose was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma March 27, 1923 to Rolland Nicholas and Nell Corbin Steil.

Rose graduated from Marquette High School in Tulsa where Wayne O'Brien also attended. Upon seeing her for the first time, and before he even met her, Wayne knew she was the beautiful girl he would marry. Following graduation, she worked as a legal secretary for a private law firm. Wayne and Rose were married October 10, 1945 following his service in the Air Force. They came from completely different backgrounds; Dad "married up", as they say. Their union lasted 68 years until his death in 2013. They moved to Houston from Tulsa in 1948 where Wayne had a successful career in engineering and they were founding members of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church. After his retirement, Wayne and Rose enjoyed spending weekends on their family farm and they became active members of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dime Box, Texas.

Of their marriage there were born 9 children: Mike (Mary Frances), Bill (Linda), Marty Freeman (Danny), Dennis (Carol), Jim (Barbara), David (Nancy), Tim (Jean), Nancy Newton (Ken) and Mary Anne Schmitt (Tim). At the time of her death, Rose had 18 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She is survived by all of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is also survived by many loving relatives. She was also preceded in death by her loving brother Mike Steil.

Rose had a servant's heart and her life centered around her faith in God, her husband Wayne and her family. She was the super "soccer Mom" long before that phrase was coined. The children were introduced to a myriad of activities and interests growing up and she was instrumental in nurturing and developing the gifts possessed by each one. Their success in a wide range of careers is a testament to her. Lovingly referred to as the "yellow Rose of Texas", she was an avid gardner. Rose also was an excellent bridge player. Mom made friends easily and it was absolutely amazing how many people knew and admired her. She set the example for us all.

The family would like to thank Pat Jackson and her staff at Autumn Grove Cottage and A-Med Hospice Nurse Donna Collins for the wonderful, loving care given Mom. We shall be forever grateful to you. The family also expresses its deepest gratitude to our sister Mary Anne who served as Mom's ever present guardian angel in taking special care of her since Dad's death.

Visitation with the family will be held at Waltrip Funeral Directors from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.,Tuesday, March 14. The vigil service will be at 7:00 p.m. A celebration of Rose's life will be held at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 11720 Joan of Arc in Houston on Wednesday March 15 at 10:30. Burial will be at a later date in Dime Box, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, 2403 Holcombe Blvd, Houston, TX 77021.

The world is a lonelier place now without my mother, Jane and her best friend for life, Rose, having gone to Heaven, both in less than a year's time. They were our Ethel and Lucy. There was no doubt about it, that Rose was our Lucy. These women bonded as friends like no other friends I have ever witnessed in my 70 years. Their husbands were friends and their children were and are still friends. Rose's obituary, so beautifully written described a true lady who I loved like my second mother. Nothing was more fun than being with these two friends, laughing, retelling so many stories of their adventures. and worrying about each others families. Trust me, these women loved to worry, but I found it loving and kind that they cared so much. I just know my Mom and Rose were put on this earth by God and blessed by him to have each other. My thoughts are with the entire family during this time and my heart is full of love for our dear, sweet, funny, and loving Rose.
