Rosemary Stephens Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 17, 2017.

STEPHENS, Rosemary Mitchell, 87 passed away on November 17, 2017 at Townsend Park Nursing Center. She was born in Johnson City, Tennessee, but moved with her mother to her grandparent's home in Elizabethton because her father passed before her birth. She studied piano throughout her years, graduating from East Tennessee State University in Art and Education. She and her husband, James C. Stephens (deceased) moved to Marietta, Georgia for him to work at Lockheed. She was a homemaker, church accompanist, and teacher at Mountain View Elementary School. She continued as a church pianist, organist, and music teacher throughout her life. She played and the family attended Kennesaw First Baptist Church for thirty years and Bascomb United Methodist Church for ten years.

Playing for weddings, funerals, and special occasions, she produced a number of professional musicians and teachers in the area. She continued to study with professional organists and artists in Atlanta and Kennesaw State into her seventies, becoming a talented portrait artist. Her faith, educational pursuits, the arts and caring for animals and people in need was a continuing important part of her life. She and her family were also an important part in founding North Cobb Christian School, now in its 33rd year in the community.

Mrs. Stephens is survived by one son, James Mitchell Stephens (Elaine) and two daughters Victoria Kemp (Perry) and Eydie Carmichael (Toby); six grandchildren, Hallie Roberts, Missy Robinson, Alana Saporiti, Susanna Stephens, Rachel Carmichael, and Grant Carmichael; one great granddaughter, Caroline Roberts; and many nieces and nephews.

Services will be at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Chapel on Tuesday, November 21 at 2pm with the Rev Donna Lucas officiating. Family will receive guests at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home on Tuesday from 12noon to 2pm. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to North Cobb Christian School (ncchristian.org) or Dance for His Glory at 495 Kurtz Road, Marietta, GA 30066.

I am so sorry to hear of Rosemary's passing. I will always be thankful for the help and encouragement I got from both Rosemary and Vicki after I graduated from college and began teaching flute and piano. I enjoyed our years together in the Cobb County Music Teachers Association and our years together in church. Rosemary was a very talented woman and I have many special memories of her playing and sharing her talent. Thinking of Rosemary and her family during this sad time.

Always a delight to see her smile and hear her voice. Great memories of her and Jim making music together with the harpsichord I made for her.

I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of Mrs. Stephens. She was my former piano teacher from 6th-10th grade which would have been 1979-1983. She was a very sweet lady. I have fond memories of her piano recitals and getting to play duets on her two beautiful grand pianos in her basement. My fondest memory is about her dog. (the Great Dane) I was a tiny girl and weighed about 95 pounds. There were many times when I would show up to lessons and her dog would escort me down the steps to her basement. He was bigger than me so it was always a bit scary as he took up most of the steps. There were also times when I would be sitting at the piano and the dog would want to lay under the piano. He was older and had arthritis so he would prop against the leg of the grand piano as he slid to the floor to lay down. When he did this, he would make the piano move about a foot away from me. It was so funny!
Even though I quit taking lessons in 10th grade I still continued to play the piano on my own and took lessons again as an adult and even played for my church some. My daughter is in her 13th year of piano lessons and is considering studying music in college. I will always remember Mrs. Stephens.
