Ross Mitchell "Mitch" Greenawalt, age 80, passed away July 7, 2014 at the Hospice Care Center in Copley, Ohio. He was born July 31, 1933 in Springfield, Ohio to Ross and Elizabeth Greenawalt (nee Northcraft) and graduated from Springfield High School in 1951.
Mitch enrolled in Wittenberg College, in Springfield as a music major. After three years, he transferred to The Ohio State University. In 1956, he was "invited" by the government to join the U.S. Army. He spent the next two years in Army bands at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Fort Lee, Virginia, defending the country with his French horn.

Returning to his music studies at Wittenberg, he joined the band and orchestra where he met senior Virginia "Ginny" Sprang in the French horn section. He taught for one semester in Coshocton, Ohio before graduating in 1959 with a B.S. in Music Education, and was then hired as the first instrumental music teacher/band director specifically for the Copley-Fairlawn Schools junior high/middle school faculty. He and Ginny were married in Cleveland in August, 1959 and moved to Akron. Mitch loved teaching and working with junior high and middle school students.
He also loved the state of Maine, particularly Camp Kawanhee, a boys' camp in Weld, Maine, where he was a camper and counselor for many summers in the 1940's and 1950's. Having summers free after earning his M.S. in Secondary Education from the University of Akron in 1966, he was able to return to Camp Kawanhee with his family for six summers, teaching canoeing and rowing.

He retired from teaching in 1988, but continued to keep occupied by working at the Montrose Swim Club, Rinky Dink miniature golf courses, and later Pam's Posies, where he delivered flowers for 20 years. He was an active member of Faith Lutheran Church, both directing and participating in the choir and handbell choir, and mowing the lawn with the "Lay Weeders." He and Ginny enjoyed concerts, theater, reading, camping, and traveling in the United States, Canada and Europe.
His memberships included Phi Gamma Delta social fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega national service fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music honorary, Phi Delta Kappa, professional education fraternity, Ohio Education Association, Ohio Music Educators Association, Copley Lions Club, and Sons of the American Revolution.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law Ann and Jack Wagner, and leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Virginia; daughters and sons-in-law Gail (Brian) Knarr of Pittsburgh, Beth (Todd) Johnson of Buffalo, Susan (Andrew) Mason of Columbus; son and daughter-in-law Ross III (Gloria Shade) Greenawalt of Tulsa; grandchildren Rachel Knarr, Adam Johnson and Erin Johnson; and nephews Eric and Kent Wagner.
Entombment will be private. Calling hours will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, 2726 West Market Street, Fairlawn, on Friday, July 11 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 12 noon.

Mitch's family has been blessed by the spiritual support of Pastor Jean Hansen and the kindness and prayers of many friends, colleagues and former students. They are grateful for medical care from Drs. Grenville and Gary Machado, Dr. Susan Ray and Dr. Scott McGee. They send many thanks to the dedicated and compassionate nurses and staff at the McDowell Cancer Center and the Hospice Care Center.
If desired, memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church, 2726 W. Market St., Fairlawn, Ohio 44333 or to the Copley-Fairlawn Schools Instrumental Music Department, c/o the Copley-Fairlawn City Schools Instrumental Music Department, c/o the Copley-Fairlawn City Schools Board of Education, 3797 Ridgewood Road, Copley, Ohio 44321.
