Rossiter "Ross" Andrew Armstrong, 93, of Evansville, IN, died Monday, March 13, 2017, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital, succumbing to pulmonary fibrosis. He was born January 9, 1924, in Detroit, MI to the late Rossiter and Virginia (Sholar) Armstrong, Sr., natives of Hopkinsville, KY.
His family returned to Hopkinsville, where he attended various elementary schools and graduated from Hopkinsville High School in 1942. He entered the armed forces shortly after graduation and was enrolled at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA, earning his US Army Air Corps pilot's wings with a rank of Second Lieutenant and piloting B17 Bombers. Ross opted to return to civilian life and was discharged in 1945 when the war ended. He returned to Hopkinsville and partnered with a friend to open an appliance sales and repair service. Ross terminated this business venture and began a career with Interstate Finance Co. (aka, CrediThrift of America, American General Finance Co., and Springleaf Financial/One Main) that spanned 42 ½ years, retiring in January 1989. He had also been a licensed realtor. He was a member of St. John's East United Church of Christ, was a Mason, a 50 year member of the Shrine, and a Carnegie speech advocate.
Ross was preceded in death by his parents and first wife, Martha (Pennington), whom he married on Valentine's Day in 1948.
He is survived by his current wife of 34 years, Beverly (Stearsman) Armstrong of Evansville, IN; son, Michael A. Armstrong and his wife, Vickie (Ripplemener); twin granddaughters, Heather Branham and her husband, Nick, and Lindsey Armstrong, all of Indianapolis, IN; half-sister, Louise Guinn of San Jose, CA; step-son, Ashley A. Alexander and his wife, Roberta (Forston), of Henderson, KY; step-daughter, Waverlyn Alexander Karch and her husband, Kurt, of Haubstadt, IN; step-grandchildren, Dr. Amanda Alexander Kline, DVM and her husband, Heath, of Evansville, IN, Dr. Adrian Miller, MD and her husband, Jeff, of Paducah, KY, Ashley Alexander II and his wife, Anna (Floyd), of Seymour, IN, Kayla Karch Wilder and her husband, Aaron, of Indianapolis, IN, and Allen Karch of Haubstadt, IN; great-granddaughter, Reagan Barnham; step-great-granddaughter, Milena Wilder, both of Indianapolis, IN; and step-great-grandsons, Camden, Alexander, and Luke Miller of Paducah, KY, and Ashley Alexander III of Seymour, IN.
Memorial Services will be 2:00 PM Thursday, March 16, 2017, at Alexander East Chapel, officiated by Rev. Kenneth Townsend. Friends may visit Wednesday from 2:00 to 8:00 PM and Thursday from 12:00 PM until service time at the funeral home. Ross will be cremated and private burial will be held at a later date.
