MILLER, Roy Andrew 1924-2014

Born September 5, 1924, in Winona, Minnesota; son of Andrew and Jessie (Eickelberry) Miller. Education: Gustavus Adolphus College, B. A., 1946; Columbia University, M. A., 1950, Ph. D., 1953. Home: 8001 Sandpoint Way N. E., Apt. C-67, Seattle, Washington 98115. Office: Department of Asian Languages and Literature, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington 98195.

CAREER: Central Intelligence Group, Washington, D. C., research analyst, 1946-48; University of California, Berkley, field work in spoken Tibetan in northern India and Kyoto, Japan, 1953-54, lecturer in Japanese, 1955; International Christian University, Tokyo, Japan, assistant professor, 1955-58, associate professor, 1958-61, professor of linguistics, 1961-62, acting vice-president for education, 1959-60; Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, associate professor and director of Institute of Far Eastern languages and chairman of department of East and South Asian languages and literature, 1964-71; University of Washington, Seattle, professor of Asian languages and literature, 1972---. Lecturer, University of Maryland Far Eastern Program, Japan, 1964-65. Military service: U. S. Naval Reserve, 1944-46; served with Office of Naval Intelligence. Member: American Oriental Society, Linguistic Society of America, Association for Asian Studies.

WORK IN PROGRESS: Origins of the Japanese Language; a study of reference grammar of Old Japanese on comparative principles.

Funeral service will be held on September 26, 2014 at St. Mark's Church at 9am.

I am deeply saddened by the news of Roy's demise. Since our first meeting in Japan in 1989 I have tremendously benefited from his linguistic expertise and equally enjoyed his warm friendship. Roy was co-supervisor for my 1991 Ph.D. thesis at Leiden University. Remembering the half joking / half serious questions he put to me during the dinner party after the defense sension still brings a smile to my face, but now also a tear ...
