We have truly lost a great man. Coach Roy was my first mentor outside the home. He was also my first coach and was the reason for my love of sports. I was lucky to meet up with Roy a few years ago and go over the good times we had at Hammel St Elem. He still had the line-ups from our teams from the 50's !! Rest in Peace my friend.

"Roy was more than a baseball coach to us youngsters (in the early 60's) at Belvedere Park in Los Angeles. He was our mentor and our friend. To some of us, a father figure. Looking out for us. He kept in touch with us for the past 50 plus years. I will never forget this great man.

Roy was loving, generous, kind and committed to helping others and making a difference in their lives. While my heart is hurting with losing him, I will always have wonderful memories of the many joyful times we had together. Miss you and love you Uncle Roy.

Roy was the epitome of a scholar and gentleman. A dear friend of my father, they played in the 1949 Arizona All Star Football Game along with Shorty Rivera. The three of them drove up two weeks prior to the game in order to get acclimated to the altitude. Later, Roy was a frequent attendee at our tailgate parties prior to UCLA Football games, especially when U of A or ASU was playing. Always kind and considerate...he will be missed!

John Alba

Roy was the embodiment of the term "student athlete". In 1948 he was captain of the Phoenix Union High School football team, which won the state chamionship. At 160 pounds, he played right guard and linebacker and was named first team All State. That same year he was student body vice president and salutatorian.

Roy was the role model every family prays for. He was generous, loving, committed to making a difference in the world. He had a great sense of humor and a gentle spirit. We were blessed to have him in our family. We love you, Uncle Roy! May you rest in peace.
