Roy graduated from Texas A&M in 1939 with a B.S. degree in animal husbandry. A member of the Aggie Cadet Corps with a second lieutenant's bars, he served 4 years in the United States Army during World War II, rising to the rank of Captain, and received a Bronze Star. After returning from the war, Roy began his 34 year career with Sears. He believed in corporate responsibility and community stewardship.

Roy was very involved with the Boy Scouts of America, retiring as a lifetime director. He served as President of the South Central Region as well as the local Sam Houston Area Council. He is the recipient of two coveted awards for outstanding work in scouting –the Silver Beaver and Silver Antelope Awards.
Roy was a very proud Aggie, and his service on behalf of his Alma mater earned him membership into the Endowed Diamond Century Club. He was later given the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Outstanding Alumni Award, and he served on the Texas A&M Research Foundation for 16 years. He also endowed the Roy L. Dye Therapeutic Horseback Riding Program for the mentally, emotionally, and physically handicapped youth through Texas A&M University in 1994.
As a member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church, Roy spent a large part of his retirement visiting local hospitals to offer support to patients and their families. He also enjoyed playing golf with his wife and friends at Pine Forest Country Club where he was a member for almost 50 years. The last 6 years Roy and his wife Anna Mae have been residents of the Buckingham/Plaza, where they have enjoyed meeting many new friends.
