Roy Berg Swanson, age 82, died peacefully on February 1, 2014, surrounded by his family. He had been slowly weakening over time due to complications of heart failure and diabetes. In his final days he was able to spend time with many of his friends and extended family members, which lent much comfort to him. His body was so tired. He lived a full and happy life. He will be missed every day.
Roy was born on May 24, 1931 to Elsie and Algot Swanson of Edmonds, WA. He graduated from Edmonds High School in 1949, where he was active in stage crew. He attended the University of Washington for a time, hoping to become a pharmacist.
During the Korean War, he was drafted into the Army before he could finalize his paperwork to enter the United States Air Force, as his dream was to become a pilot. He served approximately 18 months, was stationed for a short while overseas (Germany), and was honorably discharged with a rank of Private First Class. While in the service he received the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Occupation Medal (Germany), and garnered recognition for his high achievement in the Signal Corps.
Roy worked for General Telephone and Electric for 37 years as a Special Data Technician, retiring in 1987. Roy loved his job and his close-knit team of co-workers.
Roy also served as a volunteer fire fighter for The City of Edmonds. His service lasted his entire adult life and he had many close friends with whom he served. He was also an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He loved woodworking, and tinkering of all kinds.
Roy will be remembered as a strong, family-oriented man. He was always hard-working and willing to lend a hand to friends, family and neighbors.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barbara (Burns) Swanson, daughter Elsa Svensson (husband Glen Comeaux), daughter Erika Lynn Enloe (husband Drew Enloe), and son John Erik Swanson (wife Shannon Swanson). Roy is also survived by his four grandchildren: Karina Bentzen, Annika Enloe, Greta Enloe and Cody Enloe.
Two services will be held. The first, a memorial, will be on Saturday, February 22nd at 2pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses (6911 188th St. NE, Arlington, WA). The second, a celebration of Roy's life, will be held on Saturday, March 29th from 1-4pm at the Edmonds Conference Center (201 Fourth Avenue N). Please feel free to bring photos and stories to share! All are welcome.
