The family of Ruth Lavinnia Anderson are sad to announce her passing on Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011 at Rainycrest Long Term Care at 90 years of age. Ruth was born September 4, 1921 in Fort Frances, Ontario to Arthur (Ted) and Lavinnia (Gadd) Sexton. She was united in marriage on July 17th, 1946 to Carl William Anderson.
She is survived by daughters, Elaine (Jack) Allen of Fort Frances, ON., and Kathleen (John) Frost of Clinton, B.C., grandsons, Jeff (Laurel) Allen, Clarke (Jennifer Baker) Allen, Steven Frost and granddaughter, Sarah Frost, along with great grandsons, Kendrick and Randall Allen. Ruth is also survived by her brother Arthur Sexton of Courtenay B.C. and sister, Agnes Vera LaRocque of Fort Frances, ON., Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
She was predeceased by her parents, husband, Carl in April of 1975, and son, David in June of 1969, sisters, Clarissa (Floyd) Lindquist, and Jessie (Jack) Fulton, brother, Fred, brother-in-law, Lawrence (Larry) LaRocque and sister-in-law, Olga Sexton.
Ruth was also predeceased by Carl's family; his parents, Abel and Lovisa (Carlson), stepmother, Anna (Olson) and his siblings, Verna Richardson, Ann Irving, Wilfred Baker, Axel (Ivah) Anderson, Katherine (Edmond) Mudge, Helen Anderson, Emma (Glen) Anderson and Thomas (Ada) Anderson.
Ruth was a very independent person, leaving home at the age of 18 to find employment in eastern Ontario during the depression and war years. She worked at many various jobs in St. Catharines and Hamilton before returning to Fort Frances to work as a telephone operator in the old town hall. In those years married women were not allowed to work and Ruth was content to raise her family. When Carl retired from the Ontario Minnesota Pulp and Paper Co, Ruth went to work at Stedman's and later retrained to work as a secretary for the Knox United Church.
Ruth loved to play games of all types and was very competitive. In her younger years she loved to bowl and play baseball. Housework was always second to any type of games. She spent many a Sunday afternoon, playing board games with her children and the neighbourhood kids. She could also be found in the back yard playing baseball and volleyball. If you were a friend of her children you were always welcome to come and play. Ruth was a member of Sister Kenney Centre and enjoyed all of their activities; especially bridge and the Senior Games. Ruth had many memories of tours taken in Canada, United States, England and Ireland. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, (her and dad wore out the pages of many crossword puzzle dictionaries). An avid reader Ruth continued to read until shortly before her death.
Funeral services will be held at the Knox United Church in Fort Frances, Ontario on Monday, November 28th at 11:00 a.m. Reverend Barbara Miller will officiate with interment in Riverview Cemetery in Fort Frances, Ontario.
Active pallbearers will be Jack Allen, Jeff Allen, Clarke Allen, Len LaRocque, John (Wally) Fulton and Vivian Smith.
