RUTH ATKINSON, AGE 91, OF RALEIGH PASSED AWAY AT ST. PAUL'S VILLAS IN SAN DIEGO, CA. ON FEBRUARY 21, 2011. SHE WAS BORN FEBRUARY 24, 1919 IN ATLANTA, GA., MET HER HUSBAND RICHARD IN PITTSBURGH, PA., AND SPENT MOST OF HER ADULT LIFE IN GREENVILLE, BOONE AND RALEIGH, NC.

"HAVING COME THROUGH THE GREAT DEPRESSION AND A WORLD WAR, RUTH EARNED HER PLACE AS ONE OF BROKAW'S GREATEST GENERATION. SHE WAS MIDDLE AMERICA, ALWAYS CONCERNED ABOUT SAVING A DOLLAR FOR A RAINY DAY, QUICK WITH HER OPINIONS, A GREAT COOK AND HOME MAKER AND RESILIENT TO THE CORE. SHE LOVED HER FAMILY, CHRISTMAS, THE BEACH AND TRAVELING ABROAD."

RUTH WAS IN CHARGE OF THE NC GOVENORS MANSION AND ALL IT'S ACTIVITIES DURING THE HOLSHOUSER ADMINISTRATION. LATER IN LIFE SHE TOOK GREAT JOY IN CARING FOR ALL THE BIRDS JUST OUTSIDE HER BACK PATIO AND REMINISCING WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

RUTH WAS PRECEDED IN DEATH BY HER LOVING HUSBAND OF 58 YEARS RICHARD AND IS SURVIVED BY HER DAUGHTER ANN AND HUSBAND KIM OF SAN DIEGO, CA, SONS DICKIE AND WIFE DULCE OF HOLDEN BEACH, NC AND CHUCK OF HOMESTEAD, FL. AND FORMER DAUGHTER-IN-LAW BETH OF JUPITER, FL. SHE IS ALSO SURVIVED BY 7 GRAND CHILDREN AND 5 GREAT GRAND CHILDREN.

A MEMORIAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD IN RALEIGH, NC AT THE MITCHELL FUNERAL HOME ADJACENT TO RALEIGH MEMORIAL PARK (7501 GLENWOOD AVE) ON SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2011 AT 1:00PM WITH REV. DR. JOSEPH WARD OF WEST RALEIGH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OFFICIATING.

What a wonderful" Second Mother "Ruth has been to me for many,many years..I always loved to be with her either at her home, at the beach,in California or anywhere she might be..I loved the way she said "Darlin " to me and how wonderfully well she accepted me into the family,and included my daughter and me at many Family Functions..It has been my blessing to have shared this friendship and love with her all these years..I will miss her tremendously and will always love and treasure MY RUTHIE..I thank all you Atkinsons for so generously sharing your Mom..My love and cares to all of you Deanna
